Janice Dolores Janke (Goodway) Hartman Grow

Apr 2, 2025

Janice Dolores Janke (Goodway) Hartman Grow became a memory on March 28, 2025. She was the only child of Reinholt Bernhart Janke and Pretoria Cameron Smith born December 17, 1927, in Sydney, Australia. After a few years in Hawaii, they sailed into Canada, then lived briefly in Blaine, Bellingham, Seattle and on to Salt Lake City where her parents separated. In Ogden, they divorced, and her mother later married Arthur Willliam Goodway. She attended schools there, graduating in 1946 from Ogden High where she was the editor of the school paper. At Weber College, as an art major, she married Eugene Roy Hartman. They became the parents of Sydney William Hartman, Bruce Cameron Hartman (Joyce), Genie Marie Hartman Erickson (Terry, deceased), Amy Hartman Johnson (Allen), and Elizabeth (Liz) Nancy Hartman.

Janice had been a photography and artist model in college and was active earlier in scouting where she became a Girl Scout leader at 16, a camp counselor with the rank of Senior Service Scout. After her son began Cub Scouting, she became his den mother. Always an artist, she began teaching at South Ogden Junior High and then helping in their library. She finished her 23-year career at the district as the Indian student tutor until her retirement.

She met and married Max W. Grow, who had been her high school sweetheart. They spent many winters in Yuma, Arizona, snow-birding in their motorhome. They also traveled back to her land of birth, Australia, and New Zealand where she met again many of her cousins and friends. A few years later, she and Max traveled with her son and his wife to the U.K., Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.

Preceded in death were her parents, her husband Max, former husband Gene, and son Sydney William Hartman, grandchildren Nathan Lauran Hartman, Heidi Jan Johnson, and Scott Nathan Johnson.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 1:00 pm with a viewing prior from 10 am-12 pm at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd, Ogden, UT.

Starting at $4.32/week.
