James John Mallock

Our father, James John Mallock, devoted family man and loved by all who knew him, passed away on July 14, 2025, reuniting with the love of his life, Vicky Ann Hatch, who passed in 2020.
Born in NJ to Eastern European immigrants on January 27, 1935, he graced us all with his kind soul for 90 years. His family relocated to CA in 1948, where, after high school, he enlisted in the Air Force and served for over 3 decades. He met Vicky while stationed in Hawaii in 1967, having their first child there. He went on to have 5 more children, living all over the world while serving a highly decorated military career. Jim placed high value on participating in raising his family with Vicky as a “team effort”.
Over the long arc of his military service, Jim received numerous honors and distinctions. He earned 8 bronze stars in Vietnam for meritorious action in combat zones. As an aircraft loadmaster, he flew long- haul supply missions all over the world, logging in over 30k flight hours. He retired as Chief Master Sergeant, which is the highest enlisted rank achieved by only 1% of Air Force members. When Jim retired from the Air Force in 1987 at age 52, a flag was flown over the U.S. Capital Building in his honor.
Jim went on to work for the civil service on base, earning him another special commendation in 2006 for reaching an amazing 50 years of service to the federal government. In his spare time, Jim also volunteered for local shelters, cooking meals for hundreds of people in need. He donated a record amount of blood for the Red Cross. He was always willing to spare a dollar for anyone in need.
His kindness and generosity were legendary. He taught us there is dignity in lifelong work and service. Most of all, he taught us compassion, humility, and how to love. For this legacy, we salute the Chief!
Jim is survived by his 6 children and their spouses, 12 grandchildren, niece, and cousin.
A memorial service will be on Friday, August 15, 2025 at noon at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, where friends may visit with his family one hour prior to the service. Guests are encouraged to park on the north side of the building. Jim will be laid to rest following the service at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 500 South, Salt Lake City.
