Jerry (Gerald) Lloyd Smith

Aug 8, 2025

Jerry (Gerald) Lloyd Smith wasn’t much of a talker and when he gave you a hug, you could tell he didn’t want to spend more time there than was necessary. But we all knew he had the biggest heart, and he deeply loved the people and animals in his life. He showed up for us when we needed help, every time. He fixed things. That’s how he said he loved you and he said it every day.

Born June 27, 1937 in Ogden, Utah, Jerry was most likely a rambunctious kid who couldn’t sit still long enough to listen to lectures or study much. He started a family early and worked for the railroad. People called him Herc and we believed him because he could crush every bone in your hand with a handshake. Somewhere along the line, Jerry learned that there were only three food groups: meat, potatoes, and a concerning amount of black pepper.

Jerry worked as a roofing foreman and, after retiring, drove a school bus for fun. Imagining a grumpy old goat driving children to school and the kids absolutely adoring him will never get old. Pretty sure that was a highlight in his life. That and him building a house and cabin from the ground up. He accomplished these two things before the Internet, so it all looked like magic to us. Somehow, Jerry just knew how to do whatever he set out to do.

Spending time at his cabin with his wife Mickey and their dogs was probably his happy place and that’s most likely what his version of heaven looks like. He loved to snowmobile there, fish from his boat, spot wildlife, and drive their ATVs up to Elk Lake.

Jerry is survived by his wife Mickey Smith, son Doug Smith, daughter Becky Smith, brother Tim (Kellie) Brewer, step-children Shelly Davidson, Rocky (Amy) Mitchell, and Mike (Brett) Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Doloras Smith, his daughter Chris Price, and brothers Denny, Ralph, Doug, and Dave Smith. Jerry loved his numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren and had the best neighbors a guy could ask for. He said it a lot, too. You couldn’t find better neighbors.

Jerry, get your ATV going up that dirt road. We’ll join you when it’s time.
