Vera Jean “Vera” Thedell, 95, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2025, in Tumwater, Washington. Born on April 19, 1930, in London, England, she lived a life shaped by resilience and a fearless spirit.

Vera was the daughter of Charles Cody and Daisy Meadows. As a teenager during World War II, she contributed to the war effort by working in a factory–a time she fondly remembered for “milking screws,” a phrase that reflected her enduring humor and determination even in adversity.

Vera married Norman R. Thedell in November of 1952 and then moved to Utah. Together they raised 4 children. where she built a meaningful life and career. Vera worked as Head Cashier at Hill Air Base Exchange, where her leadership and dependability were highly regarded. She later continued her professional path with the Internal Revenue Service, bringing the same dedication and integrity to her work.

Vera’s adventurous nature remained a defining part of her life. Known affectionately as Mum or Nana to those closest to her, she embraced every opportunity for exploration. She had a fondness for hot air balloon rides and sought out thrilling experiences–from standing atop the Golden Gate Bridge and the St. Louis Arch to walking the glass-bottomed Skywalk over the Grand Canyon and flying with the Red Baron. Vera was an avid bowler and had many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lawler, and her son, Kim Cody Thedell, two brothers and two sisters. Vera is survived by three of her four children: Todd (Kate) Thedell, Sharajoy (Barry) Carr, and Brinn Thedell; as well as her sister Pam Sims. Her legacy lives on through numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who carry forward her adventurous spirit.

Vera Jean Thedell will be remembered for her strength, courage, and boundless curiosity. May her memory continue to inspire all who knew her.
