Jeff R. Nelson

Our beloved Jeff R. Nelson passed away on August 24, 2025, at the age of 61. He passed peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family. Though faced with cancer, he courageously defied the odds and surpassed his life expectancy by nine years – a true testament to his strength, resilience, and pure determination.
Jeff was born on May 23, 1964, in Ogden, Utah, to his loving parents, Becky and Sheldon Nelson. He was raised in South Ogden alongside his four siblings – Lorie, Gregg, Sue, and Michell in a nurturing home. He graduated from Bonneville High School in 1982 and went on to continue his education at Weber State’s Law Enforcement Academy. Soon after, he began his career with the South Ogden Police Department, following in the legacy of his father. He proudly served for 39 years, finishing his tenure as lieutenant. Jeff’s career was marked by numerous commendations and awards from his department, community leaders, and citizens.
These recognitions reflected not only his skill and leadership but also the compassion and integrity he carried into every aspect of his work.
On February 14, 1989, Jeff married the love of his life, Kathy Furlong. Together, they built their dream home in Eden and raised two children, Kate and Ty, who became his greatest joy. Jeff loved boating, training and caring for his dogs, vacationing anywhere with a beach or a pool, and coaching or cheering at his children’s sporting events and dance competitions. He was known for his quick wit and great sense of humor, which brought joy and laughter to everyone around him. Above all, he cherished time spent at home, surrounded by the life and family he loved so deeply.
Jeff is preceded in death by his parents, Becky and Sheldon, as well as many of his beloved dogs. His funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, at Leavitt’s Mortuary in Ogden. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Tunnels to Towers or toward the memorial funds for Tremonton’s recently fallen officers.
Jeff and the family wanted to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Christopher Dechet, Dr. Neeraj Agarwal, Julia Batten, and Maria Guizzo for their care and dedication, which contributed to Jeff’s longevity and quality of life. Above all, Jeff’s greatest legacy is the love he gave to his family and the love we will always carry for him. His presence will be missed every day, but his memory will live on in our hearts forever.
