Dr. Diane M. Kawamura (née Zacher)

Dec 4, 2025

August 4, 1946 – December 1, 2025

Dr. Diane M. Kawamura, a nationally recognized educator, author, and leader in radiologic sciences and diagnostic medical sonography, passed away on December 1, 2025, in Ogden, Utah.

Born in Hoven, South Dakota, Diane began her radiography training in Aberdeen before moving to Utah, where she built an extraordinary 41-year career at Weber State University. She founded and developed the university’s diagnostic medical sonography program, authored and edited textbooks and journal articles, and served on editorial boards for JDMS and JUM. She presented internationally and nationally, including ASUM, ASDMS, AIUM, ASRT, SDMS, and RSNA. Diane also served in leadership roles with the SDMS, ARDMS, JRCDMS, ACERT, and ASRT, contributing to multiple boards, committees, and professional initiatives that shaped the future of medical imaging.

Throughout her career she received numerous honors, including the Brady Presidential Distinguished Professor Award, Weber State University’s Last Lecture recognition, and the College of Health Professions Teacher of the Year. A lifelong learner and explorer, she visited all 50 states and five continents.

In 1967, Diane married her best friend and the great love of her life, Bryan Kawamura. Their partnership was her foundation, and his passing in 2014 was a profound loss. She treasured family dinners and especially loved time spent with her grandsons, Bryan and Mark.

Diane was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith. She served as a parish council member, Eucharistic minister, religious education teacher, and active member of the Promoters of the League of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. She received the Saint Pius X Award for her service to the Church.

She is survived by her children, Stephanie and Nathan (Corky); her grandchildren; her siblings; and many colleagues, students, and friends.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Monday, December 8, beginning at 5 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, with the Rosary to be prayed at 6 p.m. Her Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 9, at 10:30 a.m. at St. James the Just. She will be laid to rest afterward at Evergreen Memorial Park, reunited beside her beloved Bryan. Services entrusted to Myers Mortuary in Ogden.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Diane M. Kawamura Radiological Sciences Scholarship Endowment at Weber State University or the Diane M. Kawamura Memorial Scholarship for ACERT. Information for both can be found at KawamuraMemorial.com.
