Walter Prothero
Walt lived a life full of adventure. He was an acclaimed hunter, writer, and teacher. He graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor’s in Science(1970) and a Phi Kappa Phi certificate in scholastic achievement (1969). He received his Master of Arts from the University of Utah(1976), and Master of Science in Wildlife Management from Utah State University(1977).
Walt published over 400 articles in notable publications, including Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, Safari, and Sport’s Afield magazines. He enjoyed writing for Gray’s Sporting Journal and Wild Sheep. And was dang proud of being published in African Hunting Heritage Collection(1995), “In A Leopard Blind”, and The Best of Field & Stream 100 Years of Great Writing(1995), “Saga of the One-Eyed Bull”.
Walt’s books have a world wide following with titles: The Fair Chase Chronicles(2022), The Dangerous Game(2006), Mule Deer Quest(2003), Mule Deer Strategies(2002), Safari: A Dangerous Affair(2000), Me and Joe(1995), Stalking Trophy Mule Deer(1993), and Stalking Big Game(1992).
Walt taught for over 38 years at Weber State University in the English Department and Zoology Department; Creative Writing, Magazine Writing, English 101 and 102, and Wildlife and Human Biology. He was well loved or despised by his students and his peers.
Walt leaves behind his wife, Cheri, hunting partner and companion who shared his passion of traveling the world seeking the next adventure, his sister, Vickie(Steve)Monson, brother Brent(Teresa)Prothero, daughter Marsee(Steve)MacDonald and best friends, Nikki and Rick Lovell (family).
Walt chose to live his life his way and moves on to an even greater safari.
He waits for her.
