John “Jack” A. Hillier

March 23, 1934–July 1, 2025
On July 1, 2025, John A “Jack” Hillier passed away at the goodly age of 91 with his daughter and granddaughter by his side just a few days after celebrating living 33,333 days.
Jack was born in Murray Utah, on March 23, 1934 to Percy Albert Hillier and Erma Crommack West.
Jack and Carol Jean Stauffer were high school sweethearts, married July 3, 1953 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, and were the parents of 3 daughters. He was extremely devoted and loyal to Carol, and was always supportive of her hobbies and served her faithfully until her passing in 2023, just 3 months prior to their 70th wedding anniversary. They lived in Murray, Sandy, Bennion, East Layton and Kaysville.
After graduating from Granite High School, he attended BYU. After one semester, he decided he wanted an occupation working with his hands. Jack worked for Law Floral, Christiansen Brothers Construction, Walter Larsen Ford, Bennett Ford and eventually started his own shop, Jack’s Truck and Alignment. After retirement, he worked at an Auto Dealership as a shuttle driver and helped in the office.
Jack had a love for his award winning Arabian horses, chocolate (always ordering extra hot fudge on his sundaes), traveling, skiing, water skiing and boating, scuba diving, biking, running, hunting, and being active. He even went parachute jumping when Carol was out of town, knowing she would never approve!
Jack was always creating something! It seemed like there wasn’t anything that he couldn’t create, build, repair or do! And everything was always done to perfection! He was an extremely gifted wood carver, creating carousel horses, rocking horses and other animals! He built an award winning automated Noah’s ark booth for Thanksgiving Point, and a Swiss chalet for their booth at Swiss Days; complete with a water wheel, Geppetto bell ringer, and musicians rotating on the top. And helped his family with the Festival of Trees, actually winning the highest bid tree one year.
Jack was always a hard worker and was never idle. Living a life of service to his family and many others! Jack and Carol were volunteers for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. He had always wanted to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. That lifelong dream was fulfilled in 2006, when Jack and Carol served 18 months in the Nauvoo, Illinois mission. Jack was a Teamster – taking care of the horses, driving the wagon and sleigh tours of Nauvoo. He was also the Site Leader of the Brick Yard, making thousands of souvenir bricks. Jack felt like his mission was one of his greatest achievements!
As a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And he loved His Savior! He was a High Priest, served in several Bishoprics, and several leadership positions. He attended the early Saturday morning Endowment session every week for several years. He had a great love for the Priests of the Wind Mill Ward who prepared the Sacrament for him each week in his home. He really looked forward to their visits.
Jack is survived by his 3 daughters and their spouses, 10 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren that called him “Umpa”. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carol, brother Charles “Chick” Hillier, and great grandson Kai Johnson.
We are forever indebted to wonderful friends and neighbors that helped Jack and Carol! Jeff and Meghan Parrish, Rich (deceased) and Nada Anderson, Justin and Emily Brown, Dave and Connie Bailey, Jason Barnes, President Christensen, Bishop Jacobsen, Mike and Kara Yeates, Davis Hospital, Whisper Cove, and countless others!
Per Jack’s request, a private family graveside was held on July 7, 2025 at the Kaysville City Cemetery.
