Juanita Milliner Brooks

Our mother, Nita passed away on July 14, 2025. She was born to John Alfred Milliner and Mina Casper Milliner on January 9, 1932, in Peoa, Utah. As the middle child with six siblings, Nita loved sharing amusing stories about growing up on the 40-acre farm; but the loss of her five-year-old sister and best friend Marie, to pneumonia was a story always conveyed with great sadness. She graduated from South Summit HS, and on July 29, 1950, married Jack Brooks. They moved to the Ogden area, and both began careers in government service. In 1952, Nita was involved in a horrific accident at work, an explosion which shattered her pelvis and nearly severed both legs. She spent nine months at the Dee Hospital recovering and defying the odds of learning to walk again. Her survival was based solely on the strength of her will; but as an avid softball player and sports fiend, her life was never the same. After the birth of two children, Nita returned to government service in 1970 at the Ogden IRS Center, spending the bulk of her 24-year career in Criminal Investigation. She loved the people and the work equally and shared many examples of criminal cases she identified and sent to prosecution. Upon her retirement Nita and Jack enjoyed grandchildren and vacation time, road trips throughout the southwest and visiting her sister in Virginia and Florida. Jack lost his life to cancer in 2003. Nita was independent, stoic, and continued to live in and maintain the family home until she was 92 years of age. She took pride in her yard, even strangers passing by complimented her on the beauty of her flowers. Nita was a traveler at heart and if she’d had better mobility would have traveled much more. She loved seeing animals in the wild; Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon were favorites, as were family vacations to the Caribbean, California, Key West, and the Oregon Coast. As her travel days began to wane, her bus trips with former co-workers to Wendover, and BINGO at the sr. center increased; nothing pleased her more than a win! Although Nita didn’t believe in volunteerism or donating money to charity, she bought innumerable bags of hamburgers for the homeless and opened her home to extended family members; her mother, her uncle, nephews spending summers, sibs and extended family members attending college. She had someone in the guest room many times over the past 70 years. Mom was opinionated, strong-willed, and never gave in; we always knew what she thought, and she offered plenty of advice, whether solicited or not. She would debate politics and sports with anyone who dared, and she would have been a great attorney. Mom taught everyone under her influence to work hard, be self-sufficient, a good citizen, and to take care of your family. We will miss her spirit and presence.
Nita is survived by her children Becky Brooks, Curt Brooks (Janet), five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, brother Lynn Milliner (Patty), and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Nita was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack, and siblings Ken, Jim, Etta, Jean, and Marie.
A private graveside service will be conducted at the Roy Utah Cemetery.
Special thanks to the staff at Seasons Assisted Living, and Cascade Springs Hospice.
