Judy Ipsen Montoya

Jun 3, 2025

September 16, 1940 — June 1, 2025

Judy Ipsen Montoya, a radiant spirit whose nurturing heart touched many lives, was born on September 16, 1940, in the vibrant community of Ogden, Utah. She left this world on June 1, 2025, in Salt Lake City, surrounded by the warmth of her loving family.

For an impressive 30 years, Judy dedicated herself as an aircraft mechanic at Hill Air Force Base. In this role, she not only honed her skills but also forged cherished friendships that would last a lifetime. Although she took pride in her work, it was the camaraderie with her coworkers that filled her heart with joy. Known for her colorful nicknames, often infused with humor and affection, Judy had a unique way of making everyone feel special and welcomed.

Judy met THE LOVE of her life around 1968, Modesto “Ed” Montoya, later getting married. Together, they created a family full of laughter and love. Ed loved to tease Judy, often leaving their kids witness to many shenanigans, leaving them all in stitches. As Ed’s health declined, Judy dedicated herself to care for him, covering every need he had while in their home. When Ed passed in 2013, he took a brightness with him making it difficult for our family to cope.

For Judy, learning and growth did not stop there; her longing to care for others shaped her into a devoted and compassionate individual. A true caretaker at heart, Judy stepped up to help her father raise her siblings after the untimely passing of their mother. She continuously offered her love and support to him until his own passing, visiting the care facility daily. Her children and grandchildren were the center of her universe, and she took immense pride in their achievements, reveling in their successes as if they were her own.

Judy’s warmth and generosity spilled beyond her family life. She delighted in vegetable gardening, often tending to her plants with care just so she could share the fruits of her labor with friends and family. Her backyard was her sanctuary, where she found solace in mowing her yard and tilling her garden, embracing each season with unwavering enthusiasm. From expansive camping trips and hunting excursions at Hoop Lake, to crafting homemade gifts infused with love–like custom Christmas villages–Judy created lasting memories and traditions that will forever echo in the hearts of those she cherished.

Judy is survived by her beloved children, Cindy (John Pilgrim, her favorite son-in-law) Hanson, Julie (Brad) Nelson, Penny Ellis, Russell Gregory, and Duane Montoya, alongside a myriad of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry forward her legacy of kindness. She is also lovingly remembered by her siblings, Kelly Ipsen and Kim (Debie) Ipsen, as well as many dear friends, notably Larry Goodrich (thank you for taking care of Mom).

She was preceded in death by her cherished husband, Ed; son-in-law, Brad Hanson; her granddaughter, Kristen McDonald; her parents, Rodney and Floretta Ipsen; and her sister, Jan Wolford. These individuals hold a special place in her heart, and their memories remain entwined with her spirit.

Judy Ipsen Montoya lived a life rich in love, laughter, and service. Her legacy, marked by her ceaseless devotion to her family and friends, and her ability to nurture and care for those around her, will be felt for generations. As we say our goodbyes, we do so with gratitude for a life beautifully lived, honored by the love she shared and the memories she created.
