CARL O. DURSTELER

1938 – 2025
Carl was born to righteous parents who instilled in him a love for the Lord.
In his home he learned to be kind and giving, helpful to everyone, and he learned to think through a problem and find a solution. His home was filled with industry, creativity, opportunity and kindness.
Carl O. Dursteler passed away peacefully on May 11, 2025 in Sandy, Utah.
He was born on January 9, 1938 in Denver, Colorado, to Orson Carl and Marie Stoll Dursteler. Within two years his parents moved him with his two sisters to Ogden, UT where he spent his early years. There, two more sisters were added to his loving family circle.
When he was younger than two years old his mother put him in a wooden playpen assembled with bolts and screws and when she checked on him a short time later he was sitting with all four sides laying on the ground having taken the playpen fully apart. That was the very beginning of Carl’s story! He could build, repair, create, refurbish and fix anything.
In grade school Carl played his bugle and marched in his first parade on the 4th of July!
He continued to take lessons playing the coronet and participated in the school bands.
In High School he was part of a trio which performed at many events all over the Ogden Valley and even traveled to Los Angeles, CA to perform on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour on TV playing the spectacular Bugler’s Holiday! When he graduated from Ogden High School he had earned a scholarship and attended Utah State University. He graduated with a Bachelors Degree with a Major in Business and a Minor in Mathematics.
In his mid-teen years Carl was also into cars and building boats. He usually had two older cars which he fixed up, painted and sold. Then he was on to the next newer car and repeated the same process. With encouragement from his father, Carl ordered a kit to build a 14′ motor boat. After successfully assembling it he mounted the best Mercury outboard motor on the boat and couldn’t wait to make the thirty minute drive to the Pine View Dam. He continued boating for many years and upgraded to a bigger and faster boat each time. He took many of his friends and taught them to water ski and even took some over water ski jumps. He took many of his friends to Bear Lake several times. His favorite resort was Ideal Beach. These were GREAT times enjoyed by all. Carl also enjoyed snow skiing at Snow Basin Resort!
Carl served in the United States Air Force. He spent six months at Boot Camp located in Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, followed with six years service in the Utah Air National Guard. Carl was invited many times to play ‘Taps’ for those whose loved ones were being interred.
Carl started his working career at First Security Bank in Ogden. Then he relocated to Salt Lake City where he worked at Work Force Services as a Computer Programmer until he retired. He also was a builder of private homes and duplexes.
Carl really enjoyed driving so when he traveled to his vacation property in Las Vegas he drove on secondary roads to enjoy the beautiful scenery. He would stay through the winter to avoid the cold Utah winters. In the summer he always visited Jenny Lake, WY and he would always walk around the entire lake. He truly loved nature.
Carl had a wonderful relationship with his sisters and their families. Everyone LOVED UNCLE CARL! He always created happy times and brought $2 bills to hand out or small gifts. His co-workers, friends and family members described him as kind, generous, pleasant, honest, hardworking, intelligent, trustworthy, gentle, happy, capable, enjoyed a good laugh, had a quick wit and a good sense of humor. One widowed woman even called him the son never had. He went out of his way to help people who needed assistance. We love our dear Carl very much and will miss his close association. He has a noble spirit and a heart full of goodness. We are all better because of his influence and example in our lives.
Carl is survived by his sister Diane (John M. Madsen) and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Jeanette Tingey (Dale), Marianne Quigley (Vaughn), and Dalene Van Wagoner (Stewart).
The family expresses their deep gratitude and thanks for the loving healthcare professionals at Cedarwood at Sandy.
A memorial service will be held in the future at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
