Robert Leslie Hodgson

Mar 27, 2025

August 29, 1942 – March 26, 2025

Robert Leslie Hodgson, age 82, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2025, just two weeks after the passing of his beloved wife and eternal companion. Born on August 29, 1942, in Ogden, Utah, to Robert Dare Hodgson and Arleen Fern Nelson Hodgson, he was the youngest of their children and a faithful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and teacher.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Renee Van Wagoner (Richard Van Wagoner) and Francis Jeanine Downing (Loren Downing); and his daughter, Lindsey Hodgson Shannon. Though our hearts ache with his absence, we find peace knowing he is reunited with those he cherished so deeply.

Raised in Ogden, Utah, he graduated from Ogden High School where he excelled as a member of the ROTC Rifle Team, developing a steady hand and a quiet confidence with marksmanship. At age 17, he joined the Utah National Guard, pausing his service to serve a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hamburg, Germany, from 1961 to 1963. Upon returning, he completed his military service, always carrying a strong sense of duty and a lasting love for his country.

Following his time in the Guard, he attended Barber College and began his career at Dick’s Barber Shop in Ogden, where he worked for 33 years.

He also earned his teaching degree from Weber State College (now Weber State University) and began teaching in the Box Elder School District while continuing to cut hair part time. He taught at Corrine Elementary, Willard Elementary, and Foothill Elementary, pouring his heart into helping students discover the joy of reading. His custom reading programs were a true passion, carefully tailored to meet each child’s unique needs. He changed countless young lives, and his former students often remembered him as the teacher who believed in them when they needed it most.

On September 16, 1965, he married the love of his life in the Salt Lake Temple. Together, they built a life centered on faith, service, and love. They were married for 59 years and loved serving together, most recently as temple workers in the Brigham City Temple — a sacred calling they deeply cherished.

More than anything, he loved his dear wife. He often said his greatest wish was to outlive her so he could take care of her until the end. In the final tender chapter of their lives, he did just that. Her passing just two weeks before his own speaks quietly to the depth of their devotion and the life they built together — full of love, faith, and quiet commitment.

In October 2024, the two were set apart as service missionaries for the Church. Though his health prevented him from completing the mission, he never lost his desire to serve.

His legacy lives on in the lives he touched — students who discovered the joy of reading, those who learned from his steady example, and especially his family, who will always be grateful for his quiet strength, devotion, and love.
