Bruce Holdaway Jones

Bruce Holdaway Jones, born in Provo, Utah, on June 20, 1936, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by loved ones on May 11, 2025. Bruce’s journey included a childhood in Salt Lake City, Great Falls, Montana, and North Ogden, Utah, to a life in Pleasant View filled with cherished memories, adventures, and a profound legacy of love and faith.
Bruce was adventurous and loved sports. He excelled at everything he tried. He enjoyed hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, horseback riding and pack trips with his horses. He loved to explore old mines with his family and numerous youth groups in the rugged Rocky Mountains. He played football for two years at Weber State and was an army reservist before graduating from Brigham Young University, where he met his beloved wife Carolyn Kitchens Jones. Together, they creatively embraced the joys of family life, raising their children by teaching them responsibilities of caring for horses, cows, goats, chickens, ducks, geese and pigs, even mice and rats thrown in for the occasional science experiment.
The childhood they created together for their children included many church callings for both Bruce and Carolyn, family workdays in the yard and barn, fence building, hay hauling, barn construction, landscaping, gardening, and hunting to name a few.
Delightful family trips included running the Salmon River, Yellowstone, California cousins, Victoria Island, and Mexican adventures as well as Hungary, Europe, Israel, and Japan with individual kids. All were priceless memories. Their home was a place of faith and learning for their children. This included consistent morning scripture study along with other lessons on values, faith, resilience and hard work.
Bruce was a prolific land developer and home builder whose dedication to his work was exceeded only by his devotion to Carolyn until her passing, the love of his family, and his faith. He later married Joyce Wheeler, embracing and loving her and her family as his own. His love for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was evident in his regular attendance at their sporting events and dance performances. He sang to each and every one of his posterity. He loved the great cowboy songs and enjoyed singing “You Are My Sunshine” to all those he loved.
“He-Bolly-Bull” was a favorite bedtime adventure that was passed down from his father. Each family member was treated to his unique storytelling, where he recounted epic adventures, including tales of his and his brother Kent’s adventure working as a cowboy at his favorite dude ranch in Jackson Hole, WY. These included saddle bronc riding, bear “taming,” pack trips, humorous anecdotes about the “Flutter Feet” city slickers that they entertained throughout the summer. Remarkable stories of trials, successes, friendships, and personal growth from his LDS mission in Melbourne, Australia were also family favorites.
Together with Joyce, Bruce found joy in serving as usher coordinators at Temple Square and the Conference Center, where they forged lasting friendships. His unwavering faith was demonstrated through his service in many varied church callings, throughout his life. No matter where he served, each calling was an opportunity for learning and growth for both him and his family.
A passionate reader, Bruce had a deep love for the scriptures, church history, and world history, while also being an ardent fan of BYU football and basketball. He cherished the company of great friends in his study group and outdoor adventures.
His passing leaves sorrow, but for a small moment. Until we meet again.
Bruce is preceded in death by his eternal companion, Carolyn Jones; his father, Earl Jones; his mother, Alene Holdaway Jones; and his first son, Marc Allen Jones. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce Wheeler Jones, his brother, Kent Jones; and his sisters, Connie (James) Desimon and Carollee McBride. His legacy continues through his 5 children, Glade (Tonya) Jones, Dana (David) Call, Kristen (Kevin) Mukai, Ryan Jones, Carson Jones, 2 Stepchildren, Bob Wheeler, Mike (Lisa) Wheeler, 24 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
