Lanny Maurice Clelland

May 22, 2025

It is with a warm heart and a fond smile that we remember the life of Lanny Maurice Clelland, who was born on February 20, 1945, in Salisbury, Maryland, and said his last bingo call on May 18, 2025, in Ogden, Utah. He graduated from the University of Texas with a BS in Electronics Engineering and an MS from the University of Utah in Statistics. Lanny was a smart strategist, whether he was plotting his next move in golf or figuring out the best way to reel in a big catch. He was generous with his time, always ready to lend a hand or support a friend in need. His loyalty was unwavering, especially when it came to his family and the USAF, where he served as the Deputy Commander of 84th RADES (Radar Evaluation Squadron). “The only way to do great work is to love what you do,” Steve Jobs once said. Lanny lived this quote to its fullest, having a zest for life that was truly infectious.

Lanny lived a life as diverse and vibrant as his many hobbies. Whether he was fishing, golfing, bowling, or running, he always brought a sense of joy and fun to the activity. He loved playing bingo, often joking that it was his secret weapon for keeping his mind sharp. Lanny was an ABT Champion multiple times between 1989 and 2007. He was also a proud member of the Hill Air Force Base Men’s Golf Association, where he combined his love for golf and his camaraderie with his friends. He was a supportive friend, a loyal colleague, and a generous mentor to many who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him.

Lanny leaves behind his beloved wife of 42 years, Peggie Clelland, and his devoted children, Kandy Alexander, Jesse Bates, and David Bates. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Frances Clelland, brother Michael, brother-in-law Ron, and nephews Skeeter and Donny; and is survived by two sisters, Sherrie and Janet. Lanny’s deep love for his family, commitment to his work, and dedication to doing what was right are an enduring legacy that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

A memorial service for Lanny will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm MDT at the Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Boulevard, Ogden, Utah, 84404. As we celebrate Lanny’s life, we encourage all who knew him to share their memories and upload photos to the memorial page. Let us remember Lanny not with sorrow but with the same joy and kindness he brought into our lives.
