Brent J Greenwell

1947 – 2025
On April 18, 2025, Brent (78) rode off into the sunset from his home in Missoula, Montana, surrounded by family.
Born on April 15, 1947, in Ogden, Utah, Brent was one of eight children to Robert Keith and Beryl Dickens. He attended Madison Elementary, Central Junior High School, and his sophomore year at Ogden High School. He graduated from Weber High School in 1965. Brent received his B.S. in Political Science and Latin American Studies from the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in 1975.
A veteran, Brent served as a Specialist Four in the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, First Infantry Division (the “Big Red 1”) in Vietnam. He was assigned to the Headquarters’ supply room, and his duties included maintaining necessary equipment and supplies for the troops in the field and maintaining and repairing weapons. He was awarded the Bronze Star for outstanding meritorious service for his time in combat from December 1966 to November 1967.
A lifelong fly fisherman, and never without his cowboy hat, he loved tossing a fly on the water. When not on the river, you could find him sitting at his fly-tying bench, whipping up his latest creation while a western was playing on the television. The only thing that surpassed his enjoyment of fly fishing was sharing the experience with family and friends.
Brent married Stephanie Mitchell in 1969 (divorced, 1988). He married Debbie Gurr in 1989 (divorced, 2003). He has two sons, Robert James and Jeffrey Keith, and a grandson, Jamie Robert. He has four stepchildren and step-grandchildren from his marriage to Debbie Gurr, who will always be family: Jamie Ravsten (Chandler, Jessica, Jadelyn), Brittney Rivers (Devin, Damon, Kiana, Grayson, Kainoa), Tiffany Nelson (Olivia, London, Elias, Phoebe), and Curtis Graff (Brooklyn, Peyton, Quinn, Tyler).
Brent is survived by his children, grandchildren, and siblings: Dollie Moir, Sue Baden, David Greenwell, Jon Greenwell, and Jim Greenwell.
His wish was to be cremated, and for his ashes to be spread at the Greenwell family cabin in Cedar City, UT. The celebration of life will take place on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the Greenwell family cabin.
