Vernon Gary Williams

The world lost one of the good ones when Vern Williams passed away on September 3, 2025. In his 81 years, he proved that simple, everyday actions can create a deeply meaningful life.
Vern was relentlessly curious. He knew a little something about everything, from deep questions about physics & the universe, to how to fix almost anything; his interests and abilities were renowned. He designed and built his house, could (and would) repair your car, and had MacGyver fix for any situation.
That same curiosity, paired with his strong work ethic, carried Vern far beyond Utah. After Weber State and a master’s at Auburn University, his work with the international division at HAFB took him around the world, where he embraced new people, places, and cultures. He had the uncanny ability to befriend everyone he met.
But Vern’s heart was always in Layton, where he and his sweetheart Sue built a life, a family, and a home. Over the course of sixty years, their marriage became the truest expression of Vern’s life and character. His unwavering dedication to his family began with her. As a father, he was unrelentingly supportive and patient. If you were on the wrong track, he would let you know, but you never doubted the depth of his love.
With a deep respect for nature and all living things, Vern was most at home outdoors, whether fishing the Weber River, golfing, or spending countless hours creating a sanctuary at his home, the ‘Country Retreat.’ He cared deeply for people, plants, and animals alike.
Through his strength, steadiness, and generosity, Vern leaves behind a legacy of kindness and compassion that lives on. His independent spirit embraced life and abhorred funerals. Instead, we’ll be honoring him every day by striving to follow his example.
