Stephen Lee Bushnell Moulding died suddenly and unexpectedly at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, UT, on September 19, 2025.
Stephen was born in Ogden, UT on September 12, 1942, to Darlene May Bushnell Moulding and Donald Lee Moulding. The oldest of eight children, he would go on to be a loving and thoughtful father to eight children of his own, including three sons whom he adopted. Stephen spent several years living in Germany while in the U.S. Army and while he served a mission for the L.D.S. church. It was in Germany that he met the love of his life, Ellen Muench, whom he married in Geinsheim, Germany on November 7, 1968. They moved together — with five children in tow — to Utah in 1972.
Stephen graduated from Weber State College in 1975. He retired in 2002 as director of biomedical engineering at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center (UUHSC) where he worked for 30 years. He was a leader in UUHSC’s biomedical engineering department, providing technical support, when the world’s first artificial heart was implanted in one of the hospital’s patients in 1982. He taught electrical engineering courses at Salt Lake Community College for almost a decade and founded a successful biomedical technology company, Frontier Technology, in 1983. Together with his wife, Stephen was active in the Lutheran community and with local Christian ministries, including Via de Christo and Marriage Encounter.
Stephen was “Opa” to twenty-one grandchildren and many great-grandchildren who adored him and who were in turn celebrated and loved by him.
