Lila Jean Kranendonk Smith
Lila Jean Kranendonk Smith, was a beacon of love and dedication, lighting up the lives of all who knew her. Born on February 27, 1934, in Uintah, UT, Lila’s compassionate spirit was evident from her earliest days. Known for her thoughtful nature, she touched countless lives with her warmth and kindness. Following a life filled with love, testimony, dedication, and joy, Lila passed on April 1, 2026.
Lila was a woman of incredible strength, resilience, and love. After marrying the love of her life Gayland B. Smith on December 31, 1954 in Elko, Nevada and later being sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple she embarked on a journey that saw her residence in various cities, including Ogden, Salt Lake City, Granger, and Roy, before settling in Layton. She was married to Gayland for 65 years prior to his passing on November 20, 2020.
Her professional life mirrored her personal dedication and commitment, serving as a Vice President in the banking and mortgage industry working for Commercial Security Bank, Key Bank, First Security Bank, and Crossland Mortgage, before her well-earned retirement. However, what mattered most to Lila was her family. This was evident in the Sunday dinners she would host each week and the joy she found in celebrating holidays, especially Christmas with her loved ones.
In her leisure time, Lila found solace and pleasure in her immaculate garden, working tirelessly to ensure every piece of oak and every flower was perfect. Her love for beauty extended to her collection of Llardos She loved collecting each and every one of them.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in various Ward and Stake positions, Primary being her favorite. She had a strong testimony of her Savior Jesus Christ and enjoyed serving with her husband Gayland in the Ogden Temple for many years.
She is survived by her loving children; Terry (Mark) Rundquist, Todd (Mary) Smith, Steven (Cathie) Smith, and Darin (Dena) Smith, who will forever cherish her memory along with her 17 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. Also survived by her sisters; Thelda Shiffler and Vaunda Russell and sister-in-law Noreen Dennis. She was preceded in death by her husband Gayland, her parents, a baby brother, and sisters Rhea (John) Boyce, Carla Albright, brothers and sister-in-law, Clyde (Nancy) Smith, Jerald Smith, LeRoy Dennis, Albert Shiffler, Marvin Russell and grand-daughter Shannon Rundquist and great-grandson Hank Hancock.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at Oak Forest Ward, 2250 East 2200 North, Layton, UT. The funeral service will follow at the same venue at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Uintah Cemetery, 1500 East 6450 South, Uintah, Utah at 12:30 p.m. Lila’s funeral services will be livestreamed and can be viewed by clicking on the link at the bottom of her obituary page.
