Larry Gene McDonald

Apr 17, 2026

Larry Gene McDonald, a devoted father, grandfather, Vietnam Veteran, and friend passed away on April 13, 2026, at the age of 76.

The story of Larry’s life began with a restless energy that would define him. As a child, his rambunctious nature famously left teachers at their wits’ end, resulting in a steady stream of notes home to a mother who worked tirelessly to keep pace with his antics. That vitality found its home on the athletic field, where Larry emerged as a sports prodigy. A 1968 Ben Lomond High Student Body President, he led the charge as quarterback and commanded the diamond as baseball captain.

Following his service in the Vietnam War, Larry dedicated 45 years to the Department of Defense at Hill AFB. A true free spirit, he lived entirely on his own terms, maintaining his competitive edge through decades of golf and recreational leagues.

Life was simply more fun when viewed from a stadium bleacher or a theater chair. Alongside his son, Ryan, Larry made a tradition out of the easy escape of a movie and the predictable excitement of a ballgame–uncomplicated moments made better because they were together.

He is survived by his brother, Douglas (Ann); son, Ryan (Brandie); and cherished granddaughters, Sophia, Alyssa, Harper, and Quinn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wendell and Ruth.

Larry was a charismatic, funny, and fiercely loyal man who lived life entirely by the beat of his own drum. His spirit and energy will be missed.
