Dorothy Kay Field Kendall

Apr 27, 2026

Our beautiful wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, Dorothy Kay Field Kendall (85), passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Ogden, Utah, to Lavere Orin Field and Dorothy Luella Spiers on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1941. She was the middle child of 3. She wrote in a life sketch, “My Mom told me that when the nurses brought me to her, I had a little green bow in my hair. Everyone wanted my parents to name me Patricia since I was born on St. Patrick’s Day. I’m glad they didn’t, I like my name.” Because her mother’s name was also Dorothy, she always went by Kay.

Kay grew up in Ogden, Utah where she had a happy childhood. She loved school and attended Lincoln Elementary where she loved hopscotch, jumping rope, and playing jacks in the hallways. She loved her childhood home with the big yard, lots of viny trees, a ditch running across the back, and beautiful lilac bushes. She was always a tomboy and could pretty much keep up with or outdo most of the boys.

When Kay was 16 her father passed away. This was a great heartache to her and her family. She had always spent a lot of time with him and she missed him terribly, but life would go on.

Kay graduated from Ben Lomond High School and attended Weber State College. During this time, she became one of the first female deputy sheriffs in Weber County where she worked as a dispatcher. She was very proud of her time there. She also worked as a lab technician at Thomas D. Dee Hospital prior to her marriage. She began working at the Internal Revenue Service in 1974 and retired in 2001.

Kay met her sweetheart, Dirk Kendall, at a party in May of 1962. They began dating and were married September 20, 1962 in the Logan Utah Temple. They were blessed with 3 daughters and 2 sons. Kay loved spending time with her family who were blessed by her love, time, and example. She spent countless hours serving them. She was a strength to her sweetheart, children and grandchildren through difficult and happy times and will be greatly missed.

Kay’s favorite hobby was her family but she also loved quilting (which she learned in her 70’s) and made beautiful quilts for many family members. She loved Snickers candy bars, eating out at Burger King and Crown Burger, going to movies, plays, and the symphony. She loved The Wizard of Oz, and Harry Potter. She made the best peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and was the official family pie maker.

Kay was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had a strong testimony of her Savior and was a great example of faith and courage. She served in many callings throughout her life with the most recent being preparing the programs for Sunday services, a calling she enjoyed very much. She also loved the temple and was blessed to be a temple worker in the Ogden temple for several years. She loved family history work and participated in the church indexing program, helping make digital records searchable. She indexed thousands of names over the years.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Larry Field, her step-father Carl Arbon, and her son Jason Kendall. The loss of her son was a great heartache for her and we know she is rejoicing at her reunion with him. Kay is survived by her loving husband Dirk Kendall, her children Michelle (Greg) Holt, Jan (David) Koontz, Darin (Cathy) Kendall, daughter-in-law Keli Kendall, Robynn (Mike) Stoddard. She is also survived by her sister Joy (Clyde) Johnson, 19 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren.

There aren’t enough words or space on a page to say how much Kay will be missed. We will miss her beautiful smile, hugs and kisses, kind ways, and listening ear.
