Kenneth Arnold Hummell

After having lost our beloved mother Lucille Marie Hummell two weeks ago on Easter Monday, it is with sorrow, but gladdened in the hope of a forthcoming and glorious resurrection, that we announce the passing of our dear Father, Kenneth Arnold Hummell on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026.
Kenneth, known affectionately as Ken, was born on July 2, 1933 in a beautiful old farm house on his grandfather Harrison’s farm located by the Ohio River in Lawrence County, Ohio. Although born in Ohio, Ken considered himself a Kentuckian. He was the eldest son of William Arnold Hummel and Charlotte Elizabeth Harrison. At the age of eighteen months, Ken’s mother died from complications associated with the birth of his younger brother, Charles. His loving grandmother Lyda or Lydia Hummel provided most of the influence and nurturing during his adolescence; as did his grandmother Lucy and his grandfather Isaac (Ike) Harrison as Ken matured. Ken attended public schools in Kentucky and Ohio, on both sides of the Ohio River; graduating from Ironton High School (Ohio) in June 1951. He attended in Kentucky Ashland Jr College until he enlisted in the United States Navy on January 11, 1952. He advanced through the enlisted grades to Chief petty officer, and upon qualifying for the Naval Enlisted Scientific Education Program (NESEP), advanced through the varying commissioned officer ranks to Lieutenant Commander (LCDR). Ken served aboard a number of naval vessels and ships during his career. While stationed in Great Lakes, Illinois, his first was the USS Ely (PCE 880), followed by the USS Newport News (CA-148), the USS Topeka (CLG-8) and lastly, his favorite, the USS Chicago (CG-11) as the Talos Missile Battery officer. Ken experienced combat in four tours of duty during the Vietnam War. After a short tour with the Nuclear Weapons Training Group, Pacific, Ken retired honorably from the United States Navy on August 1, 1974, and moved to Hooper, Utah.
Ken married his eternal companion, Lucille (Lucy) Marie Dawson on December 11, 1954. She was the daughter of James E. Dawson and Hattie Waldren Dawson of Iaeger, West Virginia.
Ken, along with his wife Lucy, were converted and baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on February 24, 1962. They were later sealed along with their four children for time and all eternity on January 11, 1964 in the Los Angeles Temple. Ken has held many positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, among which included Ward/Home teacher, twice as Stake Missionary , LDS Group leader by then apostle Gordon B. Hinkley while serving on two Navy cruisers, Finance Clerk, counselor followed by President of the Williamsburg, Virginia, Branch, High Priest Group teacher, High Priest Group Leader, Hooper Stake High Councilman, and Ordnance Worker in the Ogden, Utah Temple for four and a half years.
Ken attended William & Mary in Virginia, and graduated from Weber State College in Utah (Cum Laude, Phi Kappa Phi) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Science Composite, that included a major in History and a minor in Accounting. Ken also held teaching certificates for Elementary and Secondary schools. He taught sixth graders at West Point Elementary for sixteen years; retiring from the Davis School District in June 1996. He dearly loved teaching, particularly the students. It wasn’t unusual for Ken to be approached by parents and students alike thanking him for his tutorship.
Ken has loved raising cattle and farming, even at a young age on his Grandfather Ike’s farm. He particularly loved training and driving oxen. His teams were seen in Hooper, Roy, Ogden and Salt Lake City pulling covered wagons in parades, such as Days of ’47, Fourth of July, Hooper Tomato Days, etc. for twenty -five years. He also enjoyed hobby farming with his ox teams. Altogether, Ken trained five yoke teams of oxen, and took great pleasure watching grandchildren drive these gentle beasts. It was amazing the variety and amount of work he could do with his oxen. In addition to his oxen and farming, Ken also enjoyed hunting, camping and shooting muzzle loading firearms.
Ken was an avid history enthusiast. He subscribed to a wide variety of magazines, but preferred reading United States History, and Church books. He was a lifelong Republican.
Ken was preceded in death by his loving wife Lucille Marie Hummell, his eldest daughter Charlotte E. Hancey (Dave) and his brother William C. Hummell (Rita).
He is survived by his brother Charles E. Hummell (Florida), his children Kenneth Edward Hummell (Joan), Kathleen Marie Hinds (Gregg) and Sarah Diane Facer (Dell); nineteen grandchildren, forty-one great grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Please help us celebrate Ken’s life by sharing memories and uploading photos to his memorial page at www.myers-mortuary.com.
