Janice was born in Salina, Utah, to Leonard and Lorraine Spencer and resided in Aurora for the first years of her life. She moved to Ogden at age 4 when her father wanted his family to have access to higher education and other opportunities. During her youth, she loved playing many sports including basketball, volleyball, and softball. She also loved to play clarinet in the school band and was a performer in her high school drill team, the Bonnie Lassies. She attended Weber State College, performed with their drill team, and later she met and married the love of her life, Dale Slade in the Ogden Utah Temple.

Janice endured multiple serious and chronic illnesses and rarely, if ever, complained. Though limited in her physical ability, Janice’s impact was deeply felt by those blessed to be near her. She dedicated her life to raising her four children and nurturing her family. She found great joy and comfort in serving those around her in any capacity she could, like providing a listening ear, gifting treats, and crafting items such as dollhouses or quilts which she could then give away. She was a talented pianist, accompanying many singers, and taught piano lessons for many years. Later in life, she returned to college, gained a Masters of Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from Utah State University and a minor in Nutrition, which knowledge she shared freely and used to further bless all those around her. She worked as a Development Counselor for the Deseret Industries for several years. She loved helping people learn skills and increase their ability to become self-reliant. She went to work to help others improve their lives, but discovered that she was also greatly blessed and changed by her service.

One of her favorite things in life was being a grandmother. She loved to plan “Grandma Dates” for her grandchildren and spend time with each one. She wished her health had allowed her to do all she wanted to with them.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ was Janice’s greatest passion. She possessed a deep and expansive knowledge of gospel truths, and she was always eager to share her testimony and insights with others. Janice served faithfully in every Church calling she held, always magnifying her responsibilities to the best of her ability. More than anything, she exemplified a quiet submission to God’s will and a steadfast dedication to keeping His commandments. Rather than being defined by her physical limitations, Janice chose to find happiness and divine purpose in the hard lessons life presented to her. She now looks forward to the new opportunities to serve the Lord on the other side of the Veil.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Dale; her four children, Will (Heidi) Slade, Mike (Audrey) Slade, Kathie (Henry) Longmore, and Levi (Kelly) Slade; and her eleven cherished grandchildren: Jase, Brooklyn (Dysen) Pimentel, Andrew (Ashley), Ethan, Alex, Braxton, Miranda, Blaze, Perrin, Lynnlea, and Zephyr. She is also survived by her siblings, Diana (Derrill) Richards, Bonnie (Don) Hansen, Marilyn (Zane) Froerer, and Mark (Christine) Spencer, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews, and so many friends and neighbors who offered love and support, especially during her last weeks.

She wanted to acknowledge and give special thanks to Bella, Julie, and Dee from Bristol Hospice who helped care for and coach her through her last days.

Janice was reunited in spirit with those who preceded her in death: her parents, Leonard and Lorraine; her older brother, Michael and other extended family members.

A viewing will be held Friday, August 21 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the church building at 1791 North 600 East. A funeral service will be held the next day, August 22, at 11:00 a.m. at the Coldwater Stake Center, 770 East 2100 North, with a viewing beforehand at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Ben Lomond Cemetery, 526 East 2850 North. All services will be held in North Ogden, Utah.
