Judy Penhorwood

Feb 27, 2026

On Tuesday February 24th, we lost our beloved mom, grandma and friend, Judy Penhorwood. She passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s at the age of 82, surrounded by her family.

Mom was originally from Southern California. She cherished the beach, walking through orange orchards. She loved fresh fruit, sunshine, sand in her toes, and a good suntan. She graduated from Long Beach State and was passionate about teaching 3rd grade. She lived with her parents and 2 brothers. She married her love Eldon Penhorwood in 1971. They were married for 51 years.

Judy said the best thing in life were her 3 children, Steve (Kim), Ann Luoma (Sam), and Sara Wood (Woody). The children were raised in Utah. Mom fell in love with the Utah winters and took up snow skiing when she was 35, learning how to ski with her son Steve. A new passion was born. She worked for years as a National Ski Patroller earning Patroller of the year in 1993. She was also a certified PSIA instructor. One of her proudest moments was when she was selected as a gate judge for the 2002 Winter Olympic Alpine Ski Events. She loved life and lived it to fullest traveling the world, hiking and backpacking, playing bridge, golf, waterskiing and tennis. She cherished her many friendships made during her many adventures and her faith as a member of Holy Family Parish.

She embraced us with love and quickly taught us life is about making memories. Nothing was more important than family. She found a new purpose in life when she became GRANDMA. Her passion for life will be carried on by her grandchildren Bailey, Wade, Will, Jill, Patrick, Joe and Luke.

She will be greeted above by her husband Eldon, her parents, and many wonderful friends and family.

She was known for breaking the mold. She didn’t care that she had white hair when she was 35, she was fiercely independent, a natural athlete, and courageously outgoing. She taught us to be kind, to be original and to embrace nature.

We would like to thank the team at Avamere for their amazing care of our mom. They embraced mom with love. Gracie, Kenzee, and Kristen were our mom’s Guardian Angels. Unfortunately, even someone as strong as Judy loses the fight against Alzheimer’s.

A Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 11th at 11 a.m. located at Leavitt’s Mortuary & Aultorest Memorial Park, 836 36th St, Ogden.

“And in the end, the only thing that matters are those you hold in your heart and those who hold you in theirs.”
