Gary Lee Newman

January 14, 1945 ~ January 19, 2026
Gary Lee Newman, 81, passed away peacefully at his home in Roy, Utah, on January 19, 2026, surrounded by those he loved. Gary was born on January 14, 1945, in Ogden, Utah, to Marchant Manning Newman and Edna Belle Irving.
Gary graduated from Ogden High School, Class of 1963, and cherished the lifelong friendships he formed during those years. Following graduation, he proudly served six years in the Army Reserves. He later attended Weber State University, where he joined the Excels Fraternity and built many enduring friendships.
Gary began his professional life working alongside his father and ultimately pursued a career in drafting and surveying. While he worked for several companies, the majority of his career–an impressive 42 years–was spent at Great Basin Engineering from 1967 until his retirement in 2010. He was actively involved in the Weber Basin Homebuilders Association, the Ogden Engineers Club, and the Mt. Ogden Rotary Club. Gary also served faithfully as a trustee for the Roy Water Conservancy District, retiring after 33 years of dedicated service.
In 1968, Gary married the love of his life, Marilyn Thomas. They were sealed in the Ogden Temple on their anniversary in 1989 and shared 57 wonderful years of marriage. Together they raised three daughters: Stacy Johnson (Deril), Angie Hull, and Cindy Davis (Joe). Gary was a devoted grandfather to eight grandchildren–Josie, Paige, Kalli, Tate, Hunter, Ty, Lucy, and Mya–who brought him immense joy.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Marchant Manning Newman and Edna Belle Irving, and his three sisters, Joyce Lasko, Terrijean Slater, and Debbie Manning.
Gary and Marilyn loved traveling, taking Sunday drives, going on neighborhood walks, and enjoying dinners and activities with friends. Many of their most treasured family memories were made on drives together, sharing a thin-crust supreme pizza at Pizza Hut, spending time at a local park, and stopping for Slurpees at 7-Eleven.
Gary especially loved fishing trips to Alaska. Though he was known as a strict father, he never hesitated to shed a tear during a Hallmark movie.
Gary and Marilyn also served together as senior missionaries at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City and at the Church Conference Center for ten years. Gary was a constant and enthusiastic supporter of his grandchildren, faithfully attending football, soccer, and softball games, dance recitals, and choir and band performances. He was the kind of grandpa who always had treats to share–and you would never find him without a pocket full of mints.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 24, at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South. Friends and family may visit on Friday, January 23, from 6 to 8 p.m., and again on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.
