Frances “Joy” Hammerland
Frances “Joy” Hammerland, 88, of Brigham City, Utah, passed away on May 29, 2026, at Monument Pioneer Trails Care Center, surrounded by the love and care of her family and dedicated staff.
Born on June 9, 1937, in Brigham City to Lance and Patricia Hammerland, Joy was raised in Corinne and graduated from Box Elder High School in 1955. Although her given name was Frances, she was lovingly known by her middle name, Joy, to family and friends.
Joy attended cosmetology school in Ogden and built a long, rewarding career as a hairdresser. She lived in Ogden for many years but returned home frequently to visit her parents and family in Corinne. With her talent, warmth, and genuine kindness, she touched the lives of countless people, many of whom became lifelong friends. After retiring from cosmetology, she continued working at Harmon’s Grocery in Ogden, where her friendly spirit remained a highlight for customers and coworkers alike. In 2019, she moved to Brigham City when she needed assistance with her care.
Family was the heart of Joy’s world. She shared a special bond with her parents and remained deeply devoted to her brothers and sisters. She cherished family gatherings and took great joy in her relationships with her nieces and nephews. She had a thoughtful tradition of sending birthday cards with a little money tucked inside — a simple gesture that made each recipient feel truly seen and loved.
Joy also had a deep affection for animals, especially her beloved cat, Spot. She found great happiness in quiet moments with family, friends, and her pets.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lance V. and Patricia Hammerland; brothers Gary and Ford Hammerland; sister Donna Marie Hammerland; brother-in-law Myrl Wells; nephew Lance G. Hammerland; and niece Misty Blotter.
Joy is survived by her sisters, Patsy Wells and Margaret (Kenneth) Birch; sisters-in-law Janee Hammerland and Beverly Hammerland; 12 nieces and nephews; and many extended family members and dear friends.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff at Monument Pioneer Trails Care Center and to her hospice nurse, Heidi Jenson, for the loving care provided during her illness. Special thanks go to niece, Deborah Blanchard, and grandniece, Shantelle Anderson, whose devoted visits, support, and companionship brought her great comfort and joy in her final years.
