Roy L. Hassell

May 19, 2026

July 16, 1935 — May 13, 2026

Roy L. Hassell passed away peacefully at his home on May 13, 2026. He was born in Ogden, Utah on July 16, 1935 to Mildred Taylor and Leonard Carl Hassell.

Roy had a wonderful childhood and loved sharing memories and stories of growing up as the youngest of three children. He took pride in the fact that he lived in the South Ogden area for 90 years. Roy had a strong work ethic and was known for his ability to build or fix anything.

Roy attended Ogden City schools graduating from Weber High in 1953 where he excelled in track and basketball and was named first team All State in both sports. He went on to play basketball for the University of Utah and Weber State College.

Roy enlisted in the United States Army in 1955 spending time in Fort Carson, CO; Fort Bliss, TX; and Okinawa, Japan as a crypto operator.

Upon his return from Japan, Roy married his high school sweetheart, Janice Marie Grace, on June 25, 1960. They were married for 56 years. Roy and Janice were some of the original St. George snowbirds and shared many happy years together at their second home before her passing in 2017. Dad taught each of us what it meant to love unconditionally as he selflessly cared for our mom in the final years of her life.

Roy worked for the US Postal Service for 35 years, retiring in 1990, but he was far from retired. After his regular work day, Roy could be found hard at work building homes in the South Ogden area. If he wasn’t building a family home, he was working on a project for any number of his children, his wife, or his friends. He found joy in creating and building keepsakes which we will treasure for years to come. After his retirement, Roy enjoyed weekly rounds of golf at Mulligan’s followed by coffee or breakfast with his lifelong friends.

Roy’s ultimate joy in life was found in his family, especially in his grandchildren. Everything stopped when visiting Grandpa Hassell because you became his main focus. Many life lessons were learned over games of ping pong or bumper pool, putting contests, bowls of ice cream, or late-night card games. If we had an event, game, or performance, we knew grandpa would be there cheering us on.

We will always remember the annual trips to Bear Lake, family vacations to San Diego, and summer days spent swimming at grandpa’s house.

Roy will be remembered for his witty yet quiet sense of humor, his meticulous nature, but most of all, for his kind heart and gentle demeanor.

Roy is survived by his children; Chad Hassell, Guy and Cari Hassell, and Suzy and Nicole Hassell; six grandchildren, Lexie (Hayden) Shaw, Katie (Hayden) Hamblin, Bree, Gracie, Harper, and Grayson Hassell; and two great-grandchildren, Hazel and Graham. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janice; his parents and his siblings, Carl Hassell and Joyce McKee.

We express our heartfelt thanks to Mele and Ana Moala for the exceptional care they gave our dad which allowed him to stay in his home. Dr. Gary Holland, Kristi Howe, and the staff at A+ Healthcare cared for our dad with the utmost love and respect, especially in his final days.

Please join us in honoring the life of our dad, grandpa, and friend at a Celebration of Life on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the residence of Guy and Cari Hassell.
