Mauro Esteban (Steve) Lobato

May 26, 2026

1944 – 2026

Mauro Esteban (Steve) Lobato, born on November 17, 1944, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2026, at the University of Utah Hospital. A man of great dedication and warmth, Mauro’s life was marked by a deep commitment to service, vibrant personality, and an enduring love for his family.

Mauro’s journey of service began with his distinguished career in the United States Navy, where he served honorably for two decades, including during the Vietnam War. Enlisting in September 1963, he faithfully served his country until his retirement in September 1996. Following his military career, Mauro pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Social Services from Weber State University in 1977.

For thirty years, Mauro devoted himself as a Juvenile Senior Probation Officer in Ogden, Utah. Retiring July 1, 2000, he was beloved for his unwavering passion for guiding youth toward better paths. Service was not merely a job for Mauro; it was a profound calling that touched many lives. His dedication to helping others reflected the essence of his character — compassionate, sincere, and authentic.

Music and joy were constant companions in Mauro’s life. Those who knew him will fondly remember his habit of singing “Happy Birthday” to everyone, a gesture made even more special by the blessing of the sign of the cross he gently placed upon their foreheads. His authenticity in expressing love to each member of his family and circle was one of the hallmarks cherished most deeply by those around him.

Mauro’s larger-than-life personality illuminated every room he entered. Music played continuously, reflecting his passions for singing–even if off-key at times–as well as dancing. No stranger was ever met, for he truly considered all as family. His love for music, dance, fishing, trips to casinos, and vacations to Disneyland showcased a zest for life that inspired those close to him.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Elaine M. Lobato, who stood by his side through life’s journey. Mauro’s legacy continues through his children: Mauro Esteban (Christine) Lobato Jr., Ross (Shawna) Lobato, and Stephanie Lobato. His love reached even further into the joy and hope embodied by his thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Mauro was preceded in death by his mother, Adelina Lobato; his father, Max Lobato; his brother, Jose Lobato; his sister, Mary Ellen Lobato; his great-grandson, Banks Martin Lobato; and his faithful dog, Tanner–the ever-loyal companion who waits faithfully to reunite with him.
