Steve Mikesel

On the beautiful fall morning of September 29, 2026, our dad, grandpa, and friend decided it was time to join his sweetheart.
Steve was born in Ogden, Utah on April 5th, 1949, to Joyce and Ray V. Mikesell. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1967.
Steve loved telling his stories about when he was younger working for 7-Up. He then started his career at the IRS where he met the love of his life, Chris Cottam. They were married December 19th, 1969.
He retired from the IRS after 35 years of dedicated service. From there he finished his working years at Price Waterhouse-Coopers.
Every autumn, he would eagerly pack up the guns and sleeping bags for the deer hunt; though he always ended up shooting with his camera more than his rifle. He was an avid outdoorsman, loving nature, animals, and shooting guns.
He enjoyed bowling with his family every Sunday after breakfast. If it was summertime, you would find Steve and Chris on their motorcycles, in the pool, or on the golf course.
Steve’s family was his everything. He would often say it is “what’s most important.” His grandkids and great-grandkids brought everlasting joy whenever they were around.
Steve was quiet and gentle; yet the strongest and most devoted man we know.
He won several battles with cancer throughout his life. Even though it finally took him, he fought until the very end.
Steve is survived by his daughter, Shari Rasmussen (Matt Murphy); his grandchildren, Keegan (Sarah) Rasmussen and Marlee Rasmussen; and his four great-grandchildren, Justin, Julie, Poli’ala, and Keahi. He is also survived by his sister, Pam Richards; his brother, Jim (Sally) Mikesell; and his siblings-in-law, John Jeff, and Lana Cottam.
Steve was preceeded in death by his parents, Ray and Joyce Mikesell; brother in-law, Steve Richards; and by the love of his life, Chris.
The family would like to thank Intermountain Hospice, especially Amber, who helped make his last days comfortable.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 3rd, 2026, at 2:00 PM, at Leavitt’s Mortuary and Aultorest Memorial Park, 836 36th Street, Ogden, Utah 84403, with a viewing held an hour prior starting at 1:00 PM at the same location.
Condolences may be shared with the family at www.leavittsmortuary.com.
