Janine Hannah Luger

Oct 30, 2026

December 14, 1936 – October 21, 2026

Janine “Jan” Hannah Luger, 89, of Ogden, Utah, passed away October 21, 2026, from complications of heart failure. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, educator, and community volunteer, Jan will be remembered for her compassion, humility, practical wisdom, and lifelong dedication to helping others.

Born December 14, 1936, in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada, to Leo and Emma (Cuthbertson) Simpson, Jan attended Kirkland Lake Collegiate and Vocational Institute and North Bay Teachers College. She taught elementary school throughout Ontario, in British Columbia, and at a Canadian military installation in Zweibrücken, Germany, where she met her future husband, Jerome “Jerry” Luger. They married on December 29, 1965.

Jan and Jerry lived in Japan, Ohio, and California before settling in Ogden in 1983. During Jerry’s Air Force service, Jan raised their young family through extended separations, forming lasting friendships with other military wives. Jerry’s subsequent career as a Western and Delta Air Lines pilot allowed them to travel extensively, nurturing Jan’s lifelong passion for exploring new places and cultures.

Jan devoted much of her life to serving those less fortunate. An active member of the Ogden board of Catholic Community Services, she established and managed a downtown food pantry for more than 22 years. She also worked extensively with SHARE, Inc., purchasing and delivering food to families and homebound individuals. She served more than a decade on the board and steering committee of Interfaith Works, including as treasurer. She also devoted more than eight years as an unpaid volunteer with Hospice of Northern Utah, frequently caring for terminally ill children and providing comfort and companionship to patients and families facing the end of life.

In 2014, Catholic Community Services honored Jan with its Unsung Hero Award, a fitting recognition for someone who quietly gave so much while seeking so little acknowledgment.

A woman of deep Catholic faith, Jan was a longtime member of Holy Family Catholic Parish in Ogden and St. Florence Parish in Huntsville. She was a wonderful conversationalist whose common sense, sound advice, and generous spirit endeared her to family and friends. She offered understanding without judgment and became a trusted confidante and source of encouragement to many. She cherished her friendships, especially lunches spent in good company.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Helena “Boots” Brasnett and Joan Simpson. She is survived by her husband of nearly 61 years, Jerome R. Luger; brother, Jim “Chum” Simpson; children, Stephen P. Luger, Dr. Richard K. Luger (Mary Jennings Luger), and Kathleen A. Egle (Dan P. Egle); and grandchildren, Zac Luger and Hannah Jane Luger.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Northern Utah Food Bank at Catholic Community Services .
