Our beloved father, husband, grandpa, brother, son, uncle, and friend, Richard Scott Douglass, passed away unexpectedly on August 25, 2026, at his home.

Despite being in excellent health–confirmed by his doctor just weeks before his passing–his death has left those who loved and knew him deeply stunned and heartbroken. After receiving a clean bill of health, it was difficult for everyone to understand how someone so healthy could be taken so suddenly. Richard’s family fully expected he would outlive even the remarkable life of his mother, who lived to 96. While we feel the profound weight of his loss, we take comfort in knowing he is now peacefully reunited with his beloved wife Jone, whom he dearly missed every day since her passing. We can only imagine the incredible joy of their long-awaited reunion as they are brought together once again–forever side by side.

Richard was born April 13, 1941, in Smithfield, Utah, to John Bingham and Mary Florence Watson Douglass. He graduated from Ben Lomond High School in 1959. On May 15, 1965, he married Jone Pett, and they shared nearly 48 memorable years together.

Richard proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1963 to 1969. During his service, he completed Basic Training at Fort Ord, CA, before pursuing specialized medical training in San Antonio, TX. He went on to complete the rigorous Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, GA, where he earned the Basic Parachutist Badge–the coveted “Jump Wings or Wings.” He also earned his Expert Marksmanship Badge in March 1967.

Richard’s work life was defined by years of pride and service through his family business. He retired in 1999 after selling Howe Rents of Ogden, a business he and his brother Wayne owned and operated together for 21 years. Richard ran the office and formed lifelong friendships with many of the people who came in over the years. He truly couldn’t go many places without running into someone he knew from the business.

After retirement, Richard and Jone were inseparable, attending countless sporting events and maintaining season tickets for Weber State basketball. Their love of sports was nothing new–for decades prior, Richard and Jone were always in the stands proudly supporting their children’s school activities and athletics throughout their youth. Richard was a devoted father to Scott (Lisa) Douglass and Jodie (Jason) Voorhees. He was also a cherished grandfather to Ryan S. Douglass, Jonah A. Douglass, and Lauryn K. Douglass. His grandchildren were a constant joy, and over the last several years he continued his tradition of sideline support by traveling with his son Scott throughout Southeastern Idaho to cheer on their track careers.

Richard’s daughter Jodie made sure he felt loved every single day, checking in through daily phone calls or texts. Richard also loved a good meal and counted on his son-in-law Jason, a wonderful cook who always catered to Richard’s pickiness with patience and care. He enjoyed watching Dallas Cowboys football games, especially while relaxing and sharing Sunday dinners at their home.

Richard loved spending time at the family cabin, at Bear Lake, and at the Sand Dunes. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and frequently attended services in Bear Lake when visiting his grandchildren. He was also a regular participant in a weekly Monday lunch group with close family friends. His latest adventures included purchasing a UTV RZR, adding tracks so he could ride in the snow and continue making memories with his children and grandchildren. During the winter months, he could often be found taking friends up to the cabin in the RZR–enjoying the ride, the view, and the fun.

Richard’s life was a living example of patience, dedication, and generosity. Because of his humble beginnings, he took immense joy in giving his grandchildren what he called “pocket money” for school so they could buy a soda or a treat whenever they wanted. He was a wealth of knowledge; bringing up almost any topic to him was like opening a dictionary. His time was always yours–if you called, he would come, ready to help, listen, and be there when needed. He taught those around him valuable lessons simply by the way he lived his life.

Richard is survived by his children, Scott (Lisa) Douglass and Jodie (Jason) Voorhees; his grandsons, Ryan and Jonah Douglass; his granddaughter, Lauryn Douglass; his sister, Ada (Roger) Gaedcke; his brother, Dallin (Jan) Douglass; and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and their spouses.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jone; his father and mother; his brothers, Wayne and Mel; and his sister, MaryLou.

Richard will always be remembered with deep love. As he always told us:

“Love you 100 million!”

Friends may visit with family on Thursday, September 10, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Richard will be laid to rest at Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
