William R. Brown of West Weber will celebrate his 80th birthday on Saturday, Dec. 26. Friends and family may attend an open house in his honor from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints West Weber Cultural Hall, 4100 W. 900 South.?Born during the Depression on Dec. 26, 1929, he is the son of Edith Clough Smith and Roland Spencer Brown. The oldest of three children, he was born in Ogden and grew up in Weber County, attending Ogden city schools.?He married his sweetheart Lona May Brown on Sept. 23, 1960, in the Logan LDS Temple.?His three children and their spouses are Debbie and Grant Thacker, Hooper; Julie and LaVar Griffin, West Haven; and David and Laci Brown, West Weber. His three grandchildren are Mitch Thacker, Miller Thacker and Kyle Thacker.?An active member of the LDS Church, he has served in various positions and as a home teacher. At a very young age, he left home and began a short career with the railroad. He then joined the U.S. Army and is a Korean War veteran. He worked as an aircraft mechanic at Hill Air Force Base and retired in 1988 with more than 45 years of service. He then worked as a school bus driver for Laidlaw until a year ago when his eyesight failed. He enjoyed the time he spent with the children on his bus routes and the friendships with the other drivers.?He has season tickets and rarely misses a Weber State University basketball game. He enjoys telling stories about his youth, and adventures on the railroad and in the military.
