Couple celebrates 70th anniversary
Ruby and Clifton Hester of Ogden celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Aug. 17.?They were married on Aug. 17, 1939, in Stevens, Ark., during the Great Depression — he was 19 years old and she 15.?She is the daughter of Mary Carter Hunter. He is the son of Sam and Girtie-Bell Hester.?She worked as a dishwasher and cook, and later worked at Defense Depot Ogden. ?He worked at a sawmill and a railroad, then served in the U.S. Army for four years.?They moved to Utah in 1951, where he worked at the Ogden Arsenal and Hill Air Force Base.?In those days, their hobby was watching movies that were shown against the wall because there were no drive-in theaters.?They had nine children with seven surviving: Sharon and Eddy Hilton, Ogden; Renece Hester, Ogden; Diane and Jerry Lancaster, Virginia; Gail Hester, Los Angeles; Sami Hester, Ogden; James and Beverly Hester, Ogden; and Chris and Christina Hester, Ogden.?They have 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.?When asked what held them together all these years, Ruby Hester replied “I always worked hard right alongside of my husband, and we both knew what it took to make it and keep the family together — hard work and love for each other.”
