Donald M. Hughes of Washington Terrace will celebrate his 80th birthday at a family dinner on Sept. 1 at Jeremiah’s Restaurant.?He was born on Sept. 1, 1929, to Abraham and Georgia Hughes on a farm near Beverly, Ill. He is also the youngest of five sisters and two brothers who are all deceased.?On May 27, 1951, he married Lena Mae Sutherland, and they moved to the Ogden area.?His first job in Utah was at the E.C. Olson Co., making ammunition boxes for the conflict in Korea. After this he worked at the Williamsen’s Truck Body & Equipment Co., building semi-trailers and doing maintenance. He was employed briefly at Frauhauf & P.I. Steel. Later he retired from Hill Air Force Base after 28 years of service. During these years, he also helped in the family business of The Uintah Auto Salvage and ran his own small electrical repair shop.?He volunteered at Washington Heights Baptist Church, of which he is a charter member. One of his greatest delights in the 1960s was helping put the Sunday morning message through KANN Radio and working with the sound system each week until he retired. He also did some maintenance for KYFO radio station of the Bible Broadcasting Network. Many hours were donated to building Christian Heritage School. He was a board member in establishing the Ogden Rescue Mission.?He has two daughters: Sherri Boyington and special friend John Ball, and Dawn and Brett Benegar, who live nearby.?He has five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
