John Herbert Topham of Clinton will celebrate his 93th birthday today, Aug. 30.?The youngest of six children, he was born on Aug. 30, 1916, in Paragonah to Joseph Riley and Isabell Reynolds Topham.?His grandfather, John Topham, was one of the original settlers of Paragonah, having crossed the plains in 1847. By the fall of 1852, there were seven families who had built crude homes in Paragonah, opened up farms and planned to stay.?He attended school all winter and herded cattle and farmed with his father every summer. He attended Parowan High School and hunted deer in the fall, an annual sport he enjoyed. He also attended Branch Agricultural College in Cedar City.?He married Golda McBride on June 18, 1935, in the St. George LDS Temple.?He has worked a variety of jobs.?His children are Eugene Topham, Murray Topham, Lyle Topham, Gordon Topham, Stephen Topham and Beverlee Mendonza.?He later moved to Southern California, then to the Sacramento area and finally back to Utah.?After Golda Topham’s death, he married Audrey Delany.?He has been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was baptized in an irrigation ditch in Paragonah, dammed off to make a pond. He served two LDS missions with Golda.?He says he has had a colorful life history. ?He has many grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
