Clarence P. Socwell will celebrate his 80th birthday. Family and friends may attend an open house in his honor from 3 to 5 p.m. today, Jan. 10, at the Comfort Suites Hotel, 2250 S. 1200 West, Ogden.?The youngest of four children, he was born on Jan. 10, 1930, to Oliver David and Clara Phipps Socwell. He graduated from Weber State College and the University of Utah.?He married his high school sweetheart Rosamond Joy Irvine Brink on Sept. 20, 1950, and they had five children.?He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.?He taught in the public school system in Weber County for many years and opened the Bookateria Paperback Book Exchange in Ogden. He and his wife still operate the exchange after 38 years. ?He is a well-known poet and playwright and has had many works published and produced. He was Utah Poet of the Year in 1977 and is past president of the National Association of State Poetry Societies. He is currently the producer of the Gallery Theater located in the Eccles Community Arts Center in Ogden. He enjoys acting, directing, production and teaching play writing courses.?His five children are Alicia and Paul Armstrong, Callao, Va.; David and Leanne Socwell, West Jordan; James Socwell, Boise, Idaho; Jeff and Terresa Socwell, Ogden; and Tracy Socwell, Ogden.?He has 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
