John Udy of the Uintah Highlands celebrated his 90th birthday on a seven-day family cruise to the Caribbean and with a family dinner at the Ogden Golf & Country Club.?Born March 20, 1921, in Plymouth to Melvin Anes Udy and Phoebe Louise Nish, he married Nadine Thorpe on April 8, 1945, in Malad, Idaho. She died on July 28, 2002.?As a young man, he graduated from Bear River High School and later attended Weber State College. At age 21, he enlisted and served in World War II as a B-17 bomber pilot. He flew 35 missions over Germany. After active duty, he joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve and retired as a colonel in 1981. In 2003, he also joined the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for seven years as a boat crewman.?He worked at Hill Air Force base for 37 years as a section supervisor and retired in 1980.?He is an active member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the high council. He and his wife served a special services LDS mission for the Mount Ogden Stake.?His hobbies have been building six homes for his family, farming, horses, hunting, fishing, camping at Star Valley Ranch and all over the western states, and traveling to different continents, including Australia and Hawaii. He now enjoys playing bridge, which he learned at age 86.?His children and their spouses are Pam and Greg Royster, Marilyn and Wayne Cox, Randy and Laura Udy, Tammy and Randy Richards, and Kevin and Pam Udy. He has 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
