OGDEN — Those who have been involved with Greek life or social clubs at Weber State University have an invitation to go home next weekend for the WSU-sponsored Greek Life and Social Club Reunion.

The event is being held in conjunction with Homecoming Week, with a dinner Friday Sept. 18 and a tailgate party before the homecoming game Saturday, Sept. 19.

Nancy Collinwood, Alumni Director at WSU, said the event is set up so everyone can mingle easily. There will be no table assignments for the dinner and the tailgate will also be casual. “We want people to be able to be together and enjoy each other,” Batchelor said.

Julie Batchelor sits on the Student Affairs Advancement Council and is the chairperson for the reunion. Batchelor herself was Greek at WSU during the 1990s as a part of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority.

“We want to bring people back to campus to see what great things are happening at WSU now,” Batchelor said.

This is the 125th anniversary for WSU and there will be plenty of events through the year.

Plus, for many, their college years were some of their best years.

“Being a Greek, I still get together with my sorority sisters to this day,” Batchelor said. “Those were great times and they are my lifelong friends.”

Larry German agrees. German started attending the Weber Academy in the late 1950s and was member of the Excelsior Club where he served as president from 1959 to 1960. At the time, national sororities and fraternities were not allowed on campus because Weber was not yet a four-year school, but German said the social clubs were one of the highlights of his youth.

“I have retained a close, close friendship with a dozen or so of my friends from those days,” German said. His friendships also crossed with the other many women and men’s clubs on campus at the time.

Since his time at Weber his Excelsior group and the Sigma Delta Pi group have had several reunions and use the Internet to keep in touch.

He is thrilled with the idea of the Greek and social club reunion.

“I have a love affair with Weber (State University) and I go home every few years,” German, who now lives in New Mexico, said This is a good chance for me to do that.”

Pat Wheeler was working on campus in 1980. At that time, many of the sororities on campus were defunct.

“They had all tried to go national and then just dissolved,” Wheeler said. In 1985, the Dean of women students started working with Wheeler to bring the Greek system back to life. The Otyokwa and La Dianaeda sororities, which had local chapters for years prior to the dissolution, came back on campus and started to thrive.

Soon after that, the LDS sororities and fraternities got bigger and some other local groups formed chapters, with some going national, Wheeler said. Wheeler worked for 15 years as an advisor to the Otyokwa sorority.

“Weber is a big commuter school but there is a percentage of traditional students that need that. It teaches etiquette and social values and gives students a support system,” Wheeler said.

Registration is open for the dinner online. Go to the alumni website’s Events and Reunions page for RSVP information. People can register there until Sept. 15.

Cost is $35 per person and will be held at the Lindquist Alumni Center, 1235 East 4100 South. Tickets for the tailgate and football game can also be purchased from the same site. Attendees do not have to attend both events to participate, Batchelor said. For more information, visit the website or the WSU GreeK Life and Social Club Facebook page.
