The Monarch was abuzz with continuous happenings in October. Open Studio Night and “Van Sessions” with Josaleigh Pollett and Fur Foxen kicked things off on Oct. 1, followed by the Casino Night fundraiser to benefit Youth Impact, “Boo-Nanza” Halloween market, Brue’s debut Ogden concert, Imani Winds and Hot Club of San Francisco by Onstage Ogden, the inaugural Witches’ Night Out, “Bites, Brews & Tunes” featuring Old Ghost’s single release party, “Troll 2” presented by the 9 Rails Film Festival and more, filling the spacious historic venue with warmth and glee all month long.
And so far, November doesn’t show any sign of stopping. In addition to special events presented by community organizations such as Indie Ogden and Ogden Friends of Acoustic Music, the new specialty markets and ladies’ nights introduced by The Monarch last month will continue in November and into the new year.
Open Studio Night and Van Sessions have been a regular “First Friday” happening, and now there’s the Monarch Market — specialty food and craft vendors, live music, beer garden — that will occur twice a month, every second Saturday and last Saturdays, starting in January after the holidays. Specially themed ladies’ nights out will give women a needed break to relax and have fun with friends every third Thursday of the month.

Open Studio Night fills The Monarch every First Friday with live music, food, hands-on art, workshops and art exhibits in over 40 creative studios. The November lineup includes “Van Sessions” with the Ogden indie rock band Compass Rose, OCA Center’s exhibit “Life, Death, Justice,” a live letterpress demo by Thomas Studio, award-winning local artist Rose Wambsganss at Art Box, Dia de Los Muertos celebration with Las Cafeteras, Mariachi Aguilas de Esperanza and Ballet Folklorico, art exhibits in the creative studios and more.

“We’ve got everything but the turkey!” the event description says. “Come get your carb game on early with our yummy food vendors (you’ll have to wait for the stuffing and green bean casserole).” DJ Bryson will be spinning in the Gist for you to burn off those holiday indulgences. And with Ninth Muse Academy of Art and Davinci Academy hosting arts and crafts, even the kids will be entertained, so you can shop from over 30 art and food vendors: Aerie Naturals skin care, Strong Mama clothing, Stonesense earrings, Cassie Kay Art, Roman and Grey Co. candles, Northern Stitches, Tulanari jewelry, Logos Coffee, Petra’s Backstubchen, James Pies, Delicius Venezualan food, Brookey Bakes and so many more will delight all of your senses. After shopping, enjoy a free concert by the new SLC band Vinyl Koala by the beer garden.

Dia de Los Muertos at The Monarch
Now through Friday, times vary, free
The five-day celebration of Latino culture, community inclusivity and the arts — Dia de Los Muertos at The Monarch — began Monday with the opening of a community altar dedicated to the victims of COVID-19 and continues with free events throughout the week thanks to generous support from RAMP, Ogden City Arts, Utah Arts & Museums, WESTAF/NEA and other partners. “A true community engagement and partnership” is what event organizer Cirilo Franco strived toward for the celebration. “I wanted to bring an event to Ogden that would attract the Latino community since many of the art events in town are not geared toward this underrepresented community,” he said. Still to come are the Ogden City School District Student Art and Music Showcase on Wednesday, the Latino Film Fest on Thursday and a Friday night concert presented by OFOAM with Mariachi Aguilas de La Esperanza, Las Cafeteras and WSU’s Ballet Folklorico.

Indie Ogden presents “Things Getting & Giving Day” at the Ogden Bizarre this month at The Monarch. Just in time for the holidays, this special Bizarre market includes a food drive and raffle, in addition to local vendors, food, art and music. “When you think of shopping for the holidays, take a moment and find the small businesses in Ogden to shop from instead of the big box stores or Amazon,” stated Ogden Bizarre Market on its social media page. “When you shop ‘small’ you help build up our community and you give joy to these faces that work so hard to provide you all with their gifts and their talents.” The opportunity to shop local at this month’s Bizarre will help support artists and makers such as Shady Mays Designs, Signs From Someone Else, Lyricstarshine Creations, Clair De Lune Crystals, Moonstone Aromas, Vulture Vixens, Sauced Up Salsa, Petrichor Soaps, Soy Murga Candles, Macs Arts and many more.
