Moving here from Southern California, I deeply mourned over the loss of my many local, authentic Mexican restaurant choices. For years, I have trekked throughout Northern Utah, working on collecting my favorite “go-to” food spots. A little over a year ago, the locally owned and operated Carnitas Michoacan opened their doors, and they immediately filled up my calendar for lunches and dinner meet-ups. This treasure chest of deliciousness is run by a group of family and friends, and it shows. The massive menu is full of completely homemade love, so picking a favorite is a real “Sophie’s Choice”; however, the consistent favorites seem to be the Carnitas Plate and the Tacos de Birria. I am a torta and fries kind of gal, so that is typically my numero uno, but with burritos the size of your forearm, perfectly executed seafood dishes, several aguas frescas options, and more, every person at your table will have a different experience of “WOW” — and that is just an ounce of the joy of the journey. Find me there on a Friday or Saturday night, as they have the “after hours” food truck open until midnight, and that is all my hype. From my experience, owners Juan and Belina are there every day keeping it tight and keeping it right, so go today and the rest of the week, tip well, bring friends, and be that cool cat who knows the “real real.” Carnitas Michoacan is open seven days a week and located just blocks away from Salt & Hops, at 3233 Washington Blvd.
