The 43rd annual Lindquist Family Symphony Pops and Fireworks show took place at Weber State University on July 17, 2022.OGDEN — Nearly a half-century after making its debut in 1978, the Lindquist Family Symphony Pops Concert and Fireworks event will return to Weber State University’s campus this weekend.
The annual summer event is slated for Sunday, July 14, and will be held at WSU’s Ada Lindquist Plaza beginning at 9 p.m.
WSU News Coordinator Rachel Badali told the Standard-Examiner that the concert and fireworks bring some 25,000 to 30,000 attendees to campus every year.
“Lindquist Pops has become such a beloved community tradition. There’s nothing like heading to WSU’s Ogden campus on a warm summer night to settle in for this spectacular show, whether it’s for the first time or the 45th time,” Badali said.
Kicking off the festivities will be an hour-long concert provided by the New American Philharmonic. That performance will feature Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” with a battery of 16 cannons provided by the Cannoneers of the Wasatch. Attendees can also expect to hear songs from popular movie soundtracks as well as some patriotic songs. Fireworks will begin after the concert at around 10 p.m.
Said Charles Freshman — president of the Cannoneers of the Wasatch and a longtime Lindquist Pops participant — via a press release: “Listening to the crowd react after the last shot is cool for us to hear. … It’s about getting together with people we like who have common interests. Kind of the same reason people are on that lawn at Weber and come year after year.”
On-campus parking and seating for the event is available but limited. Parking lots A1 and A10 will be closed beginning Saturday at 9 a.m., and the interior part of campus will be closed to vehicles throughout the weekend.
The roundabouts off Harrison Boulevard and Dixon Drive also will be closed to traffic. However, vehicles will still be able to access the campus from Skyline Drive and Taylor Avenue.
Prospective attendees may not leave blankets or chairs or save spaces before 6 p.m. Saturday. Items placed on the lawn beforehand will be removed. Tarps, stakes, tent pegs and personal fireworks also are not allowed due to safety concerns.
The Lindquist Family Symphony Pops Concert and Fireworks event was first initiated by John A. and Telitha E. Lindquist and is now continued by John E. Lindquist, president of Ogden’s Lindquist Mortuaries and Cemeteries.
“For decades, the Lindquist family has generously supported Weber State. Summer just wouldn’t feel the same without this annual event — which exists and continues thanks to the Lindquist family’s sponsorship — bringing people together for a night of celebration and entertainment,” Badali said.
