OGDEN — An event celebrating the diversity and cultural legacy of the Ogden area is returning to Union Station this week.

The 10th annual Living Heritage Festival, presented by the Museums at Union Station, will run Friday from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. The two-day event will feature music, art, dance and food, both inside of Union Station and outdoors. Admission to the festival is free.

“Really, the point of our museums and the point of our station is to be a place for our community to celebrate and encourage its heritage and history,” Hope Eggett, curator of the museums, told the Standard-Examiner. “This particular festival showcases the traditions of the communities that make Northern Utah their home. Whether that’s cultural communities or other artisans and craftspeople.”

Eggett says there will be at least 18 live performances throughout the festival — including eight highlighted performances at the Browning Theater — as well as 50-plus vendors selling traditional artwork, crafts and more.

“Having a place where people can talk about history and also about what traditions mean to them can be a really meaningful experience. This was especially significant for us this year because our building is turning 100,” Eggett said. “So, we are trying to highlight our history a little bit as well in Ogden; how much Union Station has influenced Ogden through immigration and how many people it brought to our city.”

As a tie-in to Union Station’s centennial celebration, the “Heart of Ogden” exhibit, which includes life-sized panels featuring photos and stories describing the building’s history, will be open. Live tours of the exhibit, guided by museum staff, will be running throughout the festival.
