KAYSVILLE — Later this month, what has been touted as Utah’s first surf film festival will be coming to northern Davis County.
Hosted locally by NOCEA Studio and filmmakers/ocean advocates Brandon Harrop and Chase Moffett, the touring Save the Waves Film Festival will make a stop at the Kaysville Theater on June 26. Films begin at 7 p.m. and will be screened through 9 p.m.
There will also be food trucks, giveaways from premier outdoor and surf brands, festival swag and an all-ages pre-party at Vault on Main — located just down the street from the theater at 16 S. Main St. — beginning at 6 p.m.
The Utah date stands out among the full tour slate, situated alongside events occurring in Southern California and internationally in surfing havens like Ericeira and the Gold Coast. However, Harrop believes the Beehive State has more than its share of ocean lovers and surfing enthusiasts.
“I know, being in Utah now, there are a lot of people here that love the ocean and love the beach and love the coast and love surfing and all those kinds of things,” Harrop told the Standard-Examiner. “Even though we’re in a landlocked state, I know a lot of people who go to California constantly for vacation or vice versa from California to Utah, and I just think our two states are a perfect match.”
Several short films, including award-winning surf films from around the globe, will be shown at the event, which will also serve to raise funds for the Save The Waves Coalition. The nonprofit works with organizations globally to protect surf ecosystems.
“They work at a very grassroots level and help local communities, local leaders and local surfers — from a village level to like a big, urban city level — to just protect,” Moffett told the Standard-Examiner. “The surf, in a lot of local communities, it’s a vital resource. It also has a vital economic impact, whether it’s local surfers or tourist surfing, just the ocean in general. But, specifically, these popular surf spots definitely need to be protected.”
Added Harrop: “Chase and I are big advocates for all things outdoors and nature. We love to be stewards for Mother Earth, if you will. And that’s why this was really attractive to us and what they’re trying to achieve. We try to do similar things here in Utah in the outdoors, whether through skiing, hiking, camping or trail cleanup.”
