The winners of the Modern Abstract and Petite Impressions art competitions were announced Dec. 3 during Ogden’s First Friday Art Stroll and are on displays now, along with all of the submitted works, through Dec. 31 at the Eccles Art Center (EAC). Visitors can walk through the two art exhibits and shop for the holidays while enjoying the lights, Christmas tree and all the trimmings inside the historic Victorian mansion.

Modern Abstract is a new juried and judged competition that was open to all Utah artists in any media except photography. The contemporary works are currently on display in the center’s main gallery with the selected winners — Best in Show (“2021EZ11H,” Eric Zschiesche), 1st Place (“Random Flying,” Darryl Erdmann), 2nd Place (“It’s All a Game!,” Sheryl Gillian), 3rd Place (“Counting Down the Days,” Sue Martin), EAC Award (“Untitled,” Penny Zenger), Juror’s Award (“The Alphabet Extracted,” Mary Wells), Student Award (“A Kiss of Color,” Brinley Hatch) and three Honorable Mention awards (“Sleeping in My Bed,” Nancy Ness; “Vermillion Atmospheric,” R.K. Jolley; “Carpe Diem,” Adrian Van Suchtelen).

The Carriage House Gallery features the accepted works from the Petite Impressions competition. The art pieces are in both two- and three-dimensional art and under 8 inches in any dimension, or under 15 inches if framed. According to EAC, this annual competition, supported by new and professional artists, has become a favorite for holiday shopping.

This year’s Petite Impressions competition winners include “Art School of Fish” by Mary Wells (1st Place); “The Moon is Her Guide,” Rick Shorten (2nd Place); “Last of Fall,” Cindy Roberts (3rd Place); “Daily Bread,” Adrian Van Suchtelen (Juror’s Award); and five Honorable Mention awards — “Succulent Vase” by Kyle Guymon; “Farming Evening,” Lester Lee; “First Snow,” Sandra Cooney; “Follow the Path,” Sue Martin; and “Hummingbird Breakfast,” Robyn Farr.

Christmas decorations are also on display at EAC. Director Pat Poce decorated the art center’s historic home for the holidays this year, with lights being placed along the roof and decorated inside trees. “Picassa’s cat tree will return to the solarium but Picassa may have to share this tree with Poppy (the shaggy doodle which comes to work with assistant director Debra),” states the EAC website.

All are welcome to experience the winter wonderland ambiance for midweek holiday shopping, open in the Carriage House Gallery from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through Dec. 30. Patrons may choose an EAC keepsake and receive a free EAC membership with purchases of $50 or more. The membership may be used in the patron’s name or given as a gift membership.

In addition, “Raise the Roof” continues throughout the holiday season with “Let It Snow,” a fundraising event to provide a much-needed new roof for the art center’s 1893 mansion. Donations of any size are welcome for the purchase of snow-themed items to add to the “Raise the Roof” trees that are currently on display.

EAC offers events, arts competitions, monthly exhibits, classes, workshops and more year-round. In January, the center’s main gallery will feature the accepted works to the Third Annual Northern Utah High School Seniors Exhibit, a scholarship award competition open to all Northern Utah senior high school students in all media. A reception for the community and artists will be held during Ogden’s Art Stroll on Friday, Jan. 7, from 5-8 p.m., and the exhibit, along with Petite Impressions in the Carriage House Gallery, will continue through Jan. 29.

EAC’s gallery is free and open to the public weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information about the center and its programs, visit ogden4arts.org.
