New Monarch makers Roman Grey Co. pull inspiration from the earth

On the same day in 2021, Rachel and Johnathan McMinn returned home after the devastating news that they had been laid off from the same company. As with many of the makers at The Monarch, the changes brought by COVID-19 spurred them to change direction and follow their desire to become makers full time.
“As unexpected and difficult as this time was, it gave us the opportunity to follow our passions and finally launch the company we’ve always wanted. We are so proud of what we have created,” they said.
Roman Grey Co. was founded in July after months of research. It is named after their daughter and “encapsulates her love, spirit and energy.”
Inside their studio, you will find enchanting candles and wax melts, all encrusted in foraged crystals, among other treasures. Their sources are all local, inspired by nature.
They said that growing up in Seattle, where they also met and were married, around so much natural beauty inspired their creativity and the mediums they use. “We work with many natural mediums including preserved moss, natural soy wax, raw crystals and wood. Anything raw and nature-related inspires us.”

Roman Grey Co. sells natural soy wax candles, wax melts (all with tiny crystals distributed throughout), bigger crystals, olive wood crystal bowls, crystal terrariums with an unbroken geode and crystal inside, mini crystal terrariums, prints, moss frames and crocheted stuffies. Stepping into their shop is like stepping into a magical, sparkly fairy world … where everything smells really, really good.
Right now, you’ll find enchanting fall scents like Autumn Leaves, Warm Flannel, Apple Cider Donut, Pumpkin Spice Latte, Apple Maple Bourbon and more. Look hard enough and you might find a woodland creature living in one of their beautiful framed moss installations.
Even being Seattle natives, the McMinns love being in Ogden, which spurred them to join The Monarch community as creative members.
“Ogden has such a wonderfully eclectic creative community who are so supportive of other local artists, which makes it easy for us to become inspired when we’re there,” they said.
