According to a press release from Ogden City Arts, one of the highlighted stops for the September First Friday Art Stroll — set for Friday from 6-9 p.m. — is Ogden Union Station.

“Chugging, Screeching, Rumbling, and Billowing: Utah’s Industrial Revolution through Photographs,” presented by the Utah Division of Arts and Museums, will greet visitors passing through the Gallery at the Station.

“This exhibition is named after the sounds of machinery that replaced human and animal power in the late 19th- and early 20th-centuries,” the release said. “From steam shovels scraping for minerals, airplanes buzzing through the skies, to assembly lines humming with mass production, the Industrial Revolution marked the advent of coal, iron, and steam-powered machinery.”

The exhibition — which runs from Sept. 4-Oct. 16 — documents the emergence of Utah’s industrial prowess through what was then an emerging technology in itself.

“Photography, which emerged in the mid-19th century, became a popular medium to document the evolving industrial world,” the release said. “Photographers captured the scale and grandeur of emerging technologies juxtaposed against their transformative effect on people.

“In 1862, commercial mining began in Utah. It has since played a significant role in our history and economy, making Utah one of the largest national producers of gold, silver, copper, and other minerals, including petroleum. When the transcontinental railroad came to Utah in 1896, it connected these resources to markets across the United States, attracting immigrant labor to Utah. The Industrial Revolution helped lower costs for goods while connecting communities of new cultures and traditions.”

Meanwhile, in Union Station’s Myra Powell Gallery and also presented by the Utah Division of Arts and Museums, visitors can experience the Utah Exquisite Corpse Art Project.

“The Utah Exquisite Corpse Project is an exhibition of 25 collaborative artworks created by 58 Utah artists. Each piece is divided into several panels, each painted by a different artist, working in ignorance of what the other participants are doing, leading to fantastical and absurd figures and stories,” the release said. “The only clues telling each artist what to paint were the knowledge of where their panel was in relation to the whole, and lines or colors left at the top of their panel by the previous artist.”

The Utah Exquisite Corpse Project is on display through Sept. 30.
