Films on the Great Salt Lake to show at WSU

OGDEN — As part of its fall 2015 lecture series, the Weber Historical Society presents two, free film screenings titled ”Desert Water: A New Water Ethic” and ”Desert Water: Climate Change and the Future of the Great Salt Lake.”

Both films are based on a recently published collection of essays titled “Desert Water: The Future of Utah’s Water Resources,” edited by author Hal Crimmel, chair of WSU’s English department.

The screenings and subsequent discussion are at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, in the Weber State University Shepherd Union Wildcat Theater.

’Prophet’s Prey’ to show at Peery’s Egyptian

OGDEN — Check out what author Jon Krakauer and private investigator Sam Brower stumbled upon in the documentary presentation of ”Prophet’s Prey,” sponsored by WSU Shaw Gallery and Utah Film Center.

Director Amy Berg sheds light on how the former leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints, Warren Jeffs, took control of a religion with a history of polygamous and underage marriage.

The 2015 film screening is free and open to the public.

The event is from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Peery’s Egyptian Theater, 2415 Washington Blvd.

Come 30 minutes early and enjoy the sounds of the theatre’s Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ.

• “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” (2010, PG-13) 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. The film follows Harry Potter on a race against time to find and destroy Lord Voldemort’s secret to eternal life, the Horcruxes. Watch the sequel to “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” at the Pleasant Valley branch, 5568 Adams Ave. Parkway, Washington Terrace.

• “Casper” (1995, PG) 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. A paranormal expert and his daughter meet three mischievous ghosts and a friendly one in an old Maine mansion. “Meet” the personable Casper McFadden at the Ogden Valley branch, 131 S. 7400 East, Huntsville.

• “Poltergeist II: The Other Side” (1986, PG-13) 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20. The Freeling family moves to a new home in Arizona and discover the same supernatural forces are still pursuing Carol Anne. Check out this sequel to Steven Spielburg’s “Poltergeist” at the Ogden Valley branch.

• “Insidious” (2010, PG-13) 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21. Parents go to extreme measures when they learn their home is haunted and their comatose son is possessed by evil spirits. The supernatural horror film will screen at the Pleasant Valley branch.
