OGDEN — Fans of the cult classic “The Big Lebowski” are in for a treat this weekend with the Egyptian Theater’s presentation of the “Second Annual Ogden Big Lebowski Festival” Saturday night.

The movie and costume event start at 8 p.m. at the theater, 2415 Washington Blvd., but there are other events earlier. Those interested can meet at Fat Cats for bowling at 5:30 p.m. and the group will also go to MacCool’s, where White Russian drinks will be served.

Ryan McDonald, who is on the Egyptian Theater Foundation, had the idea for the event after he and some friends had a party a couple of years ago to celebrate the release of the movie on Blue Ray. They dressed up and watched the show, but said it would be better if it could be bigger. McDonald suggested the idea to the foundation and the group applied for RAMP funding for the event. Last year, it was a two-day event with bowling one day and the movie the next. “People were torn between the Friday and Saturday events so we decided to put it together this year,” McDonald said.

This year they didn’t rent a space for bowling, but will just take lanes as they are available.

“The film has become something of a cult classic, not to the level of ‘Rocky Horror,’ but in that realm,” said John Snow, production supervisor for the Egyptian.

A lot of groups hold the festival around April 20, but the Egyptian chooses to do it in the fall. “People are really getting into the idea of dressing up around this time and so it seems to work to do it now. It also works better for the RAMP funding we have been able to get,” McDonald said.

And judging by the success of last year’s event, it looks like it will become an Ogden tradition. Last year there were around 250 participants, which is a higher number than when the Egyptian started screening the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” a few years ago. Now that show runs two days, being sold out both days, McDonald said.

Cost of the show is $12 plus a $1.50 theater restoration fee. Participants will pay separately for the bowling and drinks. McDonald said that at 8 p.m. there will be a costume contest with an array of prizes ranging from bowling balls and bowling accessories to “Lebowski dude kits.” Lebowski books and bobbleheads will also be awarded. Snow warns that the film is not family-friendly. “It’s rated R and I think it says the “F” word something like 242 times,” Snow said with a laugh.

Snow added that people coming to see the film are in for a treat. “We now have as good a projection system that exists on the planet,” Snow said.

The theater’s digital projection system and sound system have been refurbished.
