Check out these Sundance films available for streaming on Netflix

By Taylor Hintz - | Jan 16, 2016

The 2016 Sundance Film Festival kicks off Thursday, Jan. 21, and a number of films will begin showing at the Ogden Peery’s Egyptian Theater starting Jan. 23.

One of the films on the festival’s lineup has already been acquired by Netflix, though as of noon Friday, Jan. 15, it isn’t available for streaming, according to the Verge. “Tallulah,” starring Allison Janney and Ellen Page, is written and directed by Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black producer and writer Sian Heder.

This selected list of five films, from dark dramas to comedies and documentaries, are available to stream on Netflix and made appearances at Sundance film festivals over the past several years. Brief film summaries are courtesy of IMDb.

Nominated for the grand jury prize award at the 1996 film festival, “Citizen Ruth” stars Laura Dern as Ruth Stoops, a poor drug-user who becomes pregnant and is pulled in both directions of the abortion debate.

Robert Zemeckis’ “The Walk” is a feature film spin of the true event of Philippe Petit’s high-wire walk between the World Trade Center towers in 1974, and James Marsh’s 2008 documentary first told the riveting story, winning the festival’s grand jury award and audience award, as well as an Oscar for best documentary.

Quentin Tarantino’s directorial debut is, along with his other seven films, a dark and violent film. It was nominated for the grand jury prize at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival.

Michael Fassbender plays eccentric pop band leader Frank, who wears a papier-mache head throughout the entire movie, and takes in aspring musician Jon Burroughs, played by Domhnall Gleeson. “Frank” debuted at Sundance in 2014, to an audience that had been given similar Frank masks to wear during the premiere, according to Vulture.

Nominated for the grand jury prize and having won the audience award for a documentary, “The Square” takes viewers into Tahrir Square and the streets of Egypt during the Arab Spring and eventual revolution in the country. It was also nominated for a best documentary Oscar.
