‘Greatest Showman’ sing-along coming to Peery’s Egyptian during the holiday lull

By Mark Saal standard-Examiner - | Dec 28, 2018

OGDEN — “The Greatest Showman” is about to become even greater, thanks to a theater full of Northern Utah voices.

Peery’s Egyptian Theater has yet another sing-along planned — this time for the Hugh Jackman musical blockbuster movie “The Greatest Showman.” The event will feature the words to the songs displayed on the screen as the movie plays, so audience members can sing along. The sing-along will be held Saturday, Dec. 29, in the theater at 2415 Washington Boulevard.

The first planned sing-along, at 7 p.m. that day, quickly sold out. So a second 2 p.m. matinee performance was added, according to Ann Reeder, theater event manager.

Reeder said they’ve done sing-alongs in the past — most notably “Mamma Mia,” “The Sound of Music” and “West Side Story.” Audience members have tended to get into the spirit, with one family attending “The Sound of Music” in matching outfits made out of curtains, and “lots and lots” of feather boas at “Mamma Mia.”

When the theater hasn’t been able to get the sing-along version of movies — with the lyrics on the screen — Reeder said they simply print out lyrics and turn up the house lights when the songs come along.

“That actually works pretty well,” she said.

Reeder said she and her box office manager were talking about doing some sort of event at the theater after Christmas.

“Usually, we’re just closed, but we wanted to do something between the holidays,” she said.

They’d already planned on showing “The Greatest Showman” when they decided to turn it into a sing-along. The first screening sold out in less than a month, and the matinee is already half-full, according to Reeder.

“It’s so popular because the songs are so great and it’s just so much fun,” she said. “Everyone knows the lyrics. Even my 4-year-old grandson knows them.”

Reeder said “The Greatest Showman” sing-along might become an annual thing. They’re already planning to bring the “Mamma Mia” sing-along back, and she’s confident that will sell out.

Tickets for “The Greatest Showman” sing-along are $5, available through smithstix.com or at 801-689-8700.
