Free ‘Secondhand Lions’ screening at Egyptian also includes popcorn and drink

By Mark Saal standard-Examiner - | Nov 1, 2018

OGDEN — Free move. Free popcorn. Free drink.

They had us at free.

A totally gratis screening of the classic family movie “Secondhand Lions” is being offered Friday evening at Peery’s Egyptian Theater. And not only is the film free, but the Salt Lake City-based organization AARP Utah, which is sponsoring the event, is including free popcorn and a drink in the deal.

AARP bills itself as the largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering Americans age 50 and older. The event is open to all ages.

Ann Reeder, theater event manager at Peery’s Egyptian, said AARP sponsors events like this from time to time at the theater. In September, AARP sponsored a mariachi performance. Now, its hosting this family-friendly film.

“They’re they ones who picked the movie,” Reeder said. “It’s a great movie, with Robert Duvall and Michael Caine.”

“Secondhand Lions” is the humorous, heartwarming tale of a shy 14-year-old, played by Haley Joel Osment, who spends a summer in Central Texas with his two cranky, eccentric uncles — wonderfully portrayed by Academy Award-winning actors Duvall and Caine.

Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Friday at Peery’s Egyptian Theater, 2415 Washington Blvd. A free organ concert featuring the theater’s Mighty Wurlitzer begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by the movie at 7 p.m.
